■ Ian Grillot, 24, wounded when he intervened in what authoritie­s believe was a racially motivated shooting at a bar in Olathe, Kan., that left one man from India dead and another wounded, received a $100,000 check at a gala held by the India House in Houston, Texas.

■ Yarisma Martinez, 18, of Chicago was charged with unlawful use of a weapon after police, responding to a report of shots fired, found a loaded 30-30 rifle wrapped in blankets in a stroller she was pushing, and a handgun and ammunition tucked into a diaper bag.

■ Ashton Carter, the former U.S. defense secretary, is being hired by Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass., as a professor of technology and global affairs and will direct its Belfer Center think tank.

■ Kathy Mora, library director in Great Falls, Mont., told trustees that while she didn’t condone the theft, a patron who stole a copy of Richard Matheson’s novel Bid Time Return in 1982 made a “remarkable” effort to return it, including having the book restored and signed by the author.

■ Deanna Greer, 37, and John Cain, 26, of Greene County, Tenn., were arrested for aggravated child abuse and other counts after an undercover officer, responding to an online ad, paid them $3,000 to buy their 5-monthold baby, Sheriff Pat Hankins said.

■ Peter Grossman, 29, a Philadelph­ia doctor, was charged with identity theft, computer theft and invasion of privacy after prosecutor­s said he hacked into the email, cellphones and social media accounts of several women who were high school classmates.

■ Bill Hanson, who retired from his job three years ago, celebrated his 100th birthday by returning to work for a day, spending Monday working assignment­s for his former employer, Hutchinson Plumbing, Heating and Cooling in Cherry Hill, N.J.

■ Mack Cook Jr. of Anniston, Ala., is suing Georgia-based Waffle House Inc., claiming that one of the chain’s restaurant­s caused thousands of dollars in damage from grease and sewage seeping onto his property because of malfunctio­ning equipment, a claim the company denies.

■ Elijah Vaughn, 5, was playing outside in DeBary, Fla., when what he thought was a toy snake under a jungle gym turned out to be a live rattlesnak­e that bit him on the finger, resulting in him being rushed to a hospital for treatment, Volusia County sheriff’s deputies said.
