Some reasons to have voted for Trump

-

Several columnists and letter writers have commented negatively on people who voted for President Trump. I can only speak for myself, but want to give some reasons I voted for President Trump.

The last 16 years (8 Republican and 8 Democrat) have seen increasing divisiveness in our country and our government. Both presidents were traditional politicians. We need to try something different, which Trump is. He is not a traditional politician for sure; also, Hillary was such a horrible candidate.

My biggest reason to vote for Trump is Hillary’s Supreme Court appointments would have destroyed our Bill of Rights. She is on record as saying they got it wrong on the Second Amendment. Interpreting” the Bill of Rights could destroy our country.

North Korea has increased their provocations and nothing effective has been done to stop them. The same is true of Iran. President Bush started us down the wrong path in the Middle East and President Obama doubled down. China and Russia found out they could push President Obama around (after his red line in Syria) and proceeded to do it. They would have continued to push Hillary around. I don’t yet know what will happen with President Trump. It will be difficult to make more foreign policy mistakes than were made in the last 16 years.

Education in America continues to perform well below much of the developed world. Both parties have thrown money at it but no solutions. Other countries get better results with less money. We need a new non-political look at how to improve the end result.

America has talked about nations paying their fair share to NATO and the UN but done nothing about it. President Trump has clearly stated he will address it.

Immigrants have been the heart of America and we continue to need high-quality immigrants. I do not call people here illegally immigrants; I call them criminals. Trump has promised an overhaul of our immigration system.

Law enforcement has become a whipping boy. Many politicians and journalists seem to assume law enforcement is wrong when enforcing the law gets messy. We need to fully support our police unless there is strong evidence to show them wrong. Whether police are correct in their actions or not, it is always wrong to riot, burn and loot.

People who break the law and blame it on police actions should be prosecuted the same as any other criminal.

Finally, I like the America first slogan. Every country and every leader must put their country and their people first or they will ultimately fail to survive. The American government exists to take care of America. We have been electing career politicians for years and expecting different results. We have had poor results that overall seem to get worse every year as our career politicians get worse. We now have a president who is a non-politician trying to deal with a career politician Congress. We may need to replace a large portion of the Congress before true reform can happen.
