■ A North Little Rock fire official said Monday the design and construction of a medical building destroyed by fire over the weekend contributed to its quick consumption. Fire Marshal Bob Wilson said he thinks the McCain Professional Building at 3629 McCain Blvd. “barely” met minimum standards for fire safety. Wilson said the design of the three-story, atrium-style building and an inadequate number of water sprinklers contributed to the quick spread of the fire that broke out about 10:30 p.m. Friday.

■ As a Little Rock police cruiser chased a maroon Saturn SL2 toward the intersection of Wright Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, an officer warned over the radio: “He’s going to run the light.” An instant later, the intersection exploded with noise and vehicles violently smashing into one another, flinging hunks of metal dozens of feet through the air. Once calm had returned late Friday morning, three vehicles sat smashed, dripping coolant and oil, and two others were damaged less severely. Nearly a dozen people sat dazed in their crippled vehicles, some stunned, others with gruesome injuries. And slowly, police, paramedics and spectators arrived. The chase began about 10:15 a.m. at Martin Luther King Drive and Roosevelt Road, where patrol officers spotted the parked Saturn. The car was listed as being driven without the owner’s consent.
