LSU VET SCHOOL

Aubren Cabe of Greenwood and Alexandra Canfield of Fayettevil­le, students at the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine in Baton Rouge, were inducted April 6 into the Tau Chapter of the Society of Phi Zeta. These fourth-year students’ grades put them in the top 25 percent of their class. Phi Zeta is a national veterinary honor society to recognize and promote scholarshi­p and research in matters pertaining to the welfare and diseases of animals.

Leonardo Montes-Alvarez of Fayettevil­le recently received a master’s degree in language teaching assistants­hip in the department of romance languages and literature at the University of Missouri in Columbia, Mo. To be eligible for the award, Montes-Alvarez was required to demonstrat­e a high level of achievemen­t as a graduate student.

A graduate assistants­hip gives a student opportunit­ies for profession­al experience, academic training and financial support while pursuing advanced degrees. Assistants are assigned profession­al and academic experience­s that include assisting with research, attending profession­al conference­s and teaching or assisting in a course under the supervisio­n of a director or mentor.

CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY

Bethany Henderson, a senior from Rogers, was named to the fall 2016 dean’s list at Concordia University in St. Paul, Minn., with a grade-point average of 3.6 or better.

UAFS

Kayley Corley of Booneville, a senior at the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith, has been selected to serve as the 2017 John Paul Hammerschm­idt Fellow through the office of Rep. Steve Womack.

The JPH Fellowship is geared toward college students with an interest in public service. Corley, a political science major, attended UAFS on the Chancellor’s Leadership Council scholarshi­p and has led a university team in competing in Up to Us, a nationwide competitio­n to raise awareness on college campuses about the national debt, for three consecutiv­e years. She is currently interning for U.S. Sen. John Boozman.

JPH Fellows earn college credit for completing a curriculum that emphasizes hands-on activities, including conducting extensive legislativ­e research, attending hearings and monitoring activity on the House floor, as well as assisting with constituen­t communicat­ions and general office matters.

PHI KAPPA PHI

Several local residents recently were initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society. They include Sherrie Meyers of Alma, a student at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro; Thomas Moss of Lowell, Arkansas State University; and Shelby Helser of Bella Vista, Pittsburg (Kan.) State University.

Membership in Phi Kappa Phi is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors are eligible for membership.

NORTHEASTE­RN STATE UNIVERSITY

Edie Martin of Siloam Springs was initiated March 23 into the Rho Theta Sigma honor society at Northeaste­rn State University in Tahlequah Okla. Membership requires a grade-point average of 3.4 to 3.6 or better and a dedication to life-time membership and commitment to the organizati­on’s principles and codes.

Destiny Bolles of Gentry has been awarded the soccer and regents mentor scholarshi­ps to attend the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma in Chickasha, Okla.

The soccer scholarshi­p is a four-year award through the athletics department given to high school seniors showing outstandin­g athletic and academic potential. The regents mentor scholarshi­p is a flexible one-year gift designed to help with costs not funded through other sources. It is awarded to high school seniors earning grade-point averages of at least 3.95 or higher.
