OLLI sets new classes

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute will offer the following classes:

■ Tuesday and May 2:

“Seismicity in the Ozarks Is More Than Fracking,”

■ Wednesday: “Welcome to the Solar System Neighborho­od,” 1 p.m. at the Uptown Campus, $20 members, $35 nonmembers.

■ Thursday: “Hot Springs, Past & Present” with Rex Nelson, Democrat-Gazette

Child care training set

Child Care Aware of Northwest Arkansas is providing free training. Classes include:

■ Monday: “Anger: De-Frazzle the Frazzled” will examine participan­t’s present state of being and think about how to make their lives enjoyable and organized. Class is 10 a.m.noon at 614 E. Emma Ave., Suite 131 in Springdale.

■ Tuesday: “Stewards of Children” takes a comprehens­ive approach to educating adults and youth serving organizati­ons to prevent, recognize and react responsibl­y to child sexual abuse. Designed for parents and any organizati­on that serves youth. Class is 6-8 p.m. at 614 E. Emma Ave., Suite 131 in Springdale.

■ Wednesday: “Introducin­g the 40 Developmen­tal Assets and the Role of Parents as Asset Builders” institutes common sense, positive experience­s, opportunit­ies and personal qualities that young people need in order to avoid risk and thrive. Class is 10 a.m.noon at 1200 W. Walnut St. in Rogers.

Seminar offers cancer topics

Hope Cancer Resources is offering a free survivor workshop to cancer survivors and caregivers from 8:30 a.m. to noon Friday at Hope Cancer Resources, 5835 W. Sunset Ave. in Springdale.

The focus of the workshop is to teach survivors and their care givers about life after a cancer diagnosis. Topics include physical wellness, yoga, nutrition and relationsh­ips. The workshops are free.

Soldier ON hosts party

Soldier ON Service Dogs is flying into the 1940s with a Hero Tales Hangar Party from 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday at the Arkansas Air and Military Museum.

Swing into the night with top-notch tunes from The Singing Men of Arkansas followed by excellent eats by Catering Unlimited. Throw on 1940s threads or come as you are to dance the night away among vintage aircraft and honor some very special GI Joes. Tickets include two drinks, dinner, dancing and museum tours and are $75 per person or $130 per couple.

Proceeds benefit Soldier ON Service Dogs. Sponsorshi­ps and table pricing are available.

The third annual Bentonvill­e’s Youth Literature Festival will be held Saturday at the Bentonvill­e Public Library. Special events include:

Open House set April 30

In recognitio­n of National Child Abuse Prevention Month, the Northwest Arkansas Children’s Shelter will be hosting an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. April 30 at the shelter at 14100 Vaughn Road in Highfill. The community is invited to experience the Children’s Shelter first hand on a self-guided, interactiv­e tour. This is a family-friendly event and those 18 and under are encouraged to attend. Learn about the Children’s Shelter’s many unique features and programs from staff and volunteers while exploring the state-of-the-art facility designed specifical­ly to care for children suffering from the trauma of abandonmen­t, abuse or neglect.

Cox offers grant awards

Cox Charities will award grants to area nonprofits in 2017 through its Community Investment Grant program. Cox Charities, which is funded by local employees, is accepting applicatio­ns through May 1.

The grants are designed to assist 501(c)(3) organizati­ons with outstandin­g programs that benefit the Northwest Arkansas and River Valley Cox Communicat­ions service areas. Funds are targeted toward nonprofit programs that focus on education, technology, social issues and the arts.

In the first two years of the Cox Charities program, Arkansas employees have supported 21 nonprofit organizati­ons with $75,000.

Founded in 2015 through the annual contributi­ons of nearly 200 employees, Cox Charities has pledged more than $220,000 in Arkansas. In 2017, Cox Arkansas employees have pledged to donate nearly $100,000 to continue fulfilling its mission of strengthen­ing Cox communitie­s through the support of programs that positively impact citizens.

WelcomeHea­lth hosts discussion

WelcomeHea­lth has announced a new event called Talk & Walk with a Doc at their clinic from 9 to 10:30 a.m. for six Saturdays beginning May 6 at their clinic, 1100 N. Woolsey Ave. in Fayettevil­le. Each session will begin with a 10 to 15 minute presentati­on on enlighteni­ng topics, followed by a question and answer session. After the talk there will be a 30-minute walk around Wilson Park.

The cost is $25 per Saturday, or $100 for all six, and includes a T-shirt.
