HOT SPRINGS — Hopkins Spear, prosecuting attorney, was today convicted by a jury in Circuit Court of malfeasance in office, and was fined $400. Spear had been indicted by a recent Grand Jury for alleged nonfeasance and malfeasance, on charges growing out of an investigation made by Burns’ detectives into alleged violation of the anti-gambling laws last season. The verdict today does not, it is said, remove the prosecutor from office.

MORRILTON — A rural Conway County man pleaded guilty Tuesday to first-degree murder in the still-unexplained October 2005 shooting deaths of his grandparents with whom he was living in the tiny community of Holly Springs. Samuel Adam Criswell, now 20, was sentenced to life in prison by Judge Frank Arey of Morrilton, presiding in Conway County Circuit Court. State law dictates that Criswell must serve 25 years before a possible release from prison and, then, only if the governor commutes his sentence. Shackled and handcuffed, Criswell pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Charlotte Criswell, 64, and Samuel Criswell Jr., 59, on Oct. 25, 2005.
