Facts about the Vietnam Wall

-

The Moving Wall, a half-size replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., includes every name listed in Washington. E.S. Lawbaugh of Fayetteville shared some facts about the names on the wall.

58,207 names are listed on the wall in the order they were killed. The youngest was 15 years old.

Most soldiers listed on the wall — 33,103 — were 18 years old when they were killed.

1,997 men were killed on their first day in Vietnam.

1,446 were killed on what was supposed to be their last day in Vietnam.

31 sets of brothers are listed on the wall.

Beallsville, Ohio, population 475, lost six soldiers in Vietnam. A father and son are listed on the wall. The father, serving as an adviser before the war, was killed June 8, 1956; the son, Sept. 7, 1965.

54 of the men listed on the wall attended Thomas Edison High School in Philadelphia.

Eight women — all nurses — are listed on the wall.

“Most Americans who read this wall only see the numbers that the Vietnam War created. To those of us who survived the war, and to the families of those who did not, we see the faces, we feel the pain that these numbers created. We are, until we too pass away, haunted with these numbers, because they were our friends, fathers, husbands, wives, sons and daughters.

“There are no noble wars, just noble warriors.”
