The reading of several hundred depositions, which required several weeks, was concluded two weeks ago and the case was set down for argument today. The cause for postponing the argument was the death of Mrs. T. M. Mehaffy in Little Rock. She was the wife of one of Hope’s attorneys.

■ The state Public Service Commission Monday dismissed J. C. Hawkins, an appraiser with the Assessment Co-ordination Division. It said he had not been at work since November. Hawkins, a brother of Conway County Sheriff Marlin Hawkins, had been working for the agency since 1965. The position, described officially as junior evaluator, pays about $6,000 a year. Robert E. Downie, who was appointed by Governor Rockefeller to the Public Service Commission last month, said Hawkins’ dismissal grew out of a study the PSC requested from the new director of the Assessment Co-ordination Division, Joe Burlingame. He said the Commission wanted to know about work regularity, expense accounts and general efficiency.

CONWAY — Mayor Tab Townsell said Tuesday night that he doesn’t think aldermen are ready to act on a proposal to extend zoning regulations outside the city limits, and he broached the possibility of a meeting with Faulkner County officials on the subject. Commenting after a City Council meeting in which several area residents turned out to oppose the plan, Townsell said he thought a discussion with the county “might be a good idea” before aldermen make a decision. The mayor was not specific about which county officials, but said County Judge Preston Scroggin might want the City Council to get together with justices of the peace who represent areas that would be affected by the proposal.
