Springwoods Behavioral Health

Caring Is An Essential Component of Treatment

-

The National Institute of Mental Health indicates that 17.9 percent of adults aged 18 and older are living with a mental illness in the United States. This means there are an estimated 43.4 million adults in the U.S. that have been diagnosed with some form of mild or serious mental illness. Mental illness isn’t just an afiction of adults – one in ve children in the U.S. (or 20 percent) either currently or have had a mental disorder. Although the awareness of mental health disorders has increased in recent years, 75 percent of adults who live with a mental illness believe that people are not caring and sympathetic to persons with mental illness, according to a Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) study.

Springwoods Behavioral Health, of Fayetteville, is hoping to remove this stigma associated with mental health while providing quality behavioral healthcare services that patients recommend to families and friends, physicians prefer for their patients, and employees are proud to provide. Springwoods Behavioral Health, located at 1955 W. Truckers Drive, is an 80 bed behavioral health facility providing comprehensive care for adolescents, adults, geriatrics and most recently a unit designed exclusively for women. The six acre campus opened in 2009 and is adjacent to a 123 acre Audubon Wildlife and Bird Sanctuary, providing a secluded and serene setting for comfort and healing. Located off Highway 112, the facility is easily accessible to residents of Northwest Arkansas and the surrounding communities.

Springwoods Behavioral Health currently operates the only program in Arkansas dedicated to women’s mental health – the Center for Women. The Center for Women was founded in 2013 and provides a safe and nurturing community where women of all ages offer each other hope and support as they move through life stages. Treatment is comprehensive and individualized with a focus on

crisis stabilization. The goal is to help patients, stabilize, develop healthy lifestyle patterns, identify and begin to heal the emotional issues that trigger symptoms and develop the coping skills needed to prevent relapse. Women pursue symptom management through building new strength and nding new resources to regain command of their lives.

Services offered at the Center for Women include a full continuum of mental health services exclusively for women. A professional team of psychiatrists, master’s prepared therapists, physicians and 24/7 nursing care, and the development of a collaborative interdisciplinary treatment plan. It also includes integration, education, and coordination with primary care providers and the referring agency and an active individualized discharge plan. In addition to the Center for Women, Springwoods Behavioral Health also provides several other programs. Adolescent inpatient care is provided and is speci cally designed to address the mental and behavioral issues of clients ages 12 to 17. Individuals experiencing behavioral disturbances, the inability to function at home or school, or those with thoughts of hurting themselves or others may be appropriate for acute inpatient services.

The adult acute inpatient program treats mental health patients in an intensive therapeutic structure, providing medical and psychiatric stabilization with 24-hour nursing care for patients experiencing critical symptoms. Springwoods offers a comprehensive treatment approach to stabilizing acute psychiatric and addictive disease problems in a safe and structured environment. Inpatient services treat suicidal/homicidal thoughts, medical detoxi cation, drug/alcohol abuse, Depression/mood disorders, personality disorders, Bipolar disorder, panic/anxiety, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Inpatient services are also offered for senior adults at Springwoods Behavioral Health. Mental illness affects older adults just as it does other age groups. But with seniors it is often ignored or overlooked as a ‘normal’ part of the aging process. Life challenges such as decreased physical and mental capabilities, the inability to live independently or the loss of a lifetime companion are problems sometimes too severe for an older adult to manage on their own. The family may be the rst to notice changes in his/her behavior. Warning signs that could indicate the need for treatment include: anxiety/agitation, confusion/disorientation, depression, fear/paranoia, uctuations in weight, hallucinations/ delusions, increase in alcohol or medication use, loss of interest in appearance, memory loss, mood swings, sleep disturbances, social withdrawal, suicidal thoughts, and wandering. Although older adults may frequently experience these behaviors, in many cases the true cause may be psycho-physiologic and, therefore, very treatable. If you suspect these issues have become dif cult to manage, schedule an assessment with a mental health professional.

Outpatient programs are also offered at Springwoods Behavioral

Health. Adult patients, who have achieved some stability but continue to need more intensive treatment than traditional outpatient therapy, or to prevent hospitalization, may be treated within the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) or Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP). Springwoods offers treatment for mood and anxiety disorders, chronic suicidal ideation, co-occurring disorders (psychiatric and substance-abuse disorders), personality disorders, and family/interpersonal con icts.

The Partial Hospitalization Program provides intensive treatment for patients with mild to moderate symptoms. The program features individualized treatment plan, full day of group therapy – four groups daily, ve days a week, medication management, with approximately one to four weeks of treatment. The PHP offers discharge and continued care planning from an inpatient treatment. Partial hospitalization is available from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The Intensive Outpatient Program is for patients with less serious symptoms, but who still require frequent therapy. This program can be a step-down level of care from inpatient treatment or partial hospitalization. The IOP is a half-day program, four days a week, that provides daily group therapy. Intensive outpatient is available from 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Thursday.

Springwoods Behavioral Health accepts referrals from the professional community (doctors, hospitals, therapists, social workers, nurses, schools, courts and community agencies) as well as from families.

Quali ed assessment and referral staff perform assessments 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, at no charge. Each assessment is evaluated by a physician who recommends the appropriate level of care for treatment. Recommendations are then discussed with the patient/family to assist in making an informed decision about treatment.

Springwoods Behavioral Health is a provider for most insurance/managed care plans, as well as Medicare, and is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JTC) and licensed by the Arkansas Department of Health.
