ARKADELPHIA —Henderson-Brown College closed its twenty-seventh session with the graduation exercises this morning. Diplomas were given to 12 seniors and 16 certificates were awarded. Representative Skipwith Adams of Helena addressed the class. With the closing exercises came the awarding of medals and scholarships.

■ The Arkansas Interagency Council on Smoking and Health has appointed a committee to investigate state laws against the sale of tobacco to minors. R. H. Schnee of Little Rock, executive director of the Arkansas Tuberculosis Association and chairman of the council, said, “A cursory examination of the laws indicate that Act 152 of 1929, Section 26, is still valid. This section provides that it shall be unlawful for any person, other than the parent or guardian, to give, barter or sell to a minor under 18 years of age, tobacco in any form, or cigarette papers.

■ Tim Holst was a clown for 20 years before becoming vice president of talent and production for Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus. Holst, 45, described himself during his two decades as a clown as a man whose wages were negotiated “by funny hat, big shoes, slaps, and falls.” A circus talent scout discovered Holst while he was performing in Summer stock productions in Wyoming and offered him an audition with the Clown College. The college is known in the circus world as the training ground for people interested in learning about the circus and performance skills

■ Gov. Mike Beebe named Kermit Channell the new director of the state Crime Laboratory on Wednesday, promoting him from scientific operations director. Channell, who will be the first forensic scientist to lead the lab, said he doesn’t plan to trade in his lab coat for a suit jacket. “I’m still going to help out when I can and consult with analysts,” he said. “I’ll do what I need to do to move the lab forward. I really don’t anticipate any of my goals for the lab changing,” he said. “I want a 30-day turnaround on cases and to become a lab that people will turn to for advice.”
