How to make it great

-

Given Donald Trump’s long history of self-centered, cruel, erratic, and incompetent behavior, connections with Russia among several of his close associates, continued ineptitude in foreign affairs, and his divisive speech, I believe it is now clear to most of us that electing Trump was a serious mistake. Harm is being done to our nation and its interests, and the potential for further damage grows daily.

Yet some still cling to Trump, unwilling to face the obvious. Those of you with common sense, decency, and even a little knowledge of current events from credible sources probably notice a sinking feeling in your gut. Pay attention to your conscience! Deep down you know that Trump was a bad choice for all of us.

Two groups of Trump supporters especially trouble me: (1) Christians who refuse to acknowledge that Trump’s values and actions are incompatible with Jesus’ teachings and examples. Please, reacquaint yourselves with what Christ said and did, not what a party or media figure says is Christian. (2) Republican leaders, many already privately worried about Trump’s judgment and his Russian connections. When they promote divisiveness and fear, put party before country, and gamble our country’s future for short-term partisan gains, Americans will eventually hold them accountable, along with others who failed to speak out.

There is still time to take a stand for America’s values, its future and its people. That’s what good leaders do, and that is what will make America great again. JERRY WHITE Little Rock
