100 YEARS AGO July 15, 1917

EL DO­RADO — An ef­fort to cover up a sup­posed rob­bery of the post of­fice at Law­son, a vil­lage 10 miles east of here, is be­lieved to have fur­nished the mo­tive for start­ing a fire which, early this morn­ing, swept the lit­tle town and re­sulted in a loss of $50,000. The fire started in the post of­fice. From this build­ing it spread through the vil­lage. Build­ings de­stroyed in­clude the post of­fice, the B. B. Green store, the A. C. Chaney store, the Wil­liams and McCall drug store, a bar­ber shop, and sev­eral homes and barns.

50 YEARS AGO July 15, 1967

■ More than half of the pris­on­ers in the state Pen­i­ten­tiary are suit­able for pro­ba­tion or pa­role in the judg­ment of three case­work­ers of the fed­eral bureau of Pris­ons who in­ter­viewed pris­on­ers for the state Pen­i­ten­tiary Study Com­mis­sion. In a re­port to the com­mis­sion re­leased Fri­day they said this sug­gested a so­lu­tion to over­crowd­ing prob­lems and high op­er­at­ing costs at the state’s two pris­ons. These peo­ple do not have to be locked up they said.

25 YEARS AGO July 15, 1992

■ Adults are be­ing urged to su­per­vise chil­dren closely on swim­ming trips af­ter five chil­dren drowned in the first six days of July. Arkansas Chil­dren’s Hospi­tal re­ported the drown­ings but did not re­lease names or de­tails. Since Feb. 1 at least 22 other peo­ple have drowned in Arkansas, Arkansas Demo­crat- Gazette re­ports show. That num­ber in­cludes two Lit­tle Rock men who drowned Satur­day af­ter their boat hit a jetty on the Arkansas River near Burns Park in North Lit­tle Rock.

■ A man ar­rested in the rob­bery of a Mis­souri bank has been in­dicted in U.S. Dis­trict Court for Arkansas’ East­ern Dis­trict in con­nec­tion with two state bank rob­beries from last year. Cur­rently jailed in Mis­souri’s But­ler County, Wil­liam White, 32, was in­dicted on charges stem­ming from holdups at the US Bank branch at 4311 E. Broad­way St. in North Lit­tle Rock and the First State Bank branch at 1815 E. Oak St. in Con­way, au­thor­i­ties said. Those rob­beries oc­curred in Au­gust 2006. White took about $ 1,350 from the Con­way bank and about $ 3,075 from the North Lit­tle Rock bank, ac­cord­ing to the in­dict­ment.
