100 YEARS AGO July 15, 1917

EL DORADO — An effort to cover up a supposed robbery of the post office at Lawson, a village 10 miles east of here, is believed to have furnished the motive for starting a fire which, early this morning, swept the little town and resulted in a loss of $50,000. The fire started in the post office. From this building it spread through the village. Buildings destroyed include the post office, the B. B. Green store, the A. C. Chaney store, the Williams and McCall drug store, a barber shop, and several homes and barns.

50 YEARS AGO July 15, 1967

■ More than half of the prisoners in the state Penitentia­ry are suitable for probation or parole in the judgment of three caseworker­s of the federal bureau of Prisons who interviewe­d prisoners for the state Penitentia­ry Study Commission. In a report to the commission released Friday they said this suggested a solution to overcrowdi­ng problems and high operating costs at the state’s two prisons. These people do not have to be locked up they said.

25 YEARS AGO July 15, 1992

■ Adults are being urged to supervise children closely on swimming trips after five children drowned in the first six days of July. Arkansas Children’s Hospital reported the drownings but did not release names or details. Since Feb. 1 at least 22 other people have drowned in Arkansas, Arkansas Democrat- Gazette reports show. That number includes two Little Rock men who drowned Saturday after their boat hit a jetty on the Arkansas River near Burns Park in North Little Rock.

10 YEARS AGO July 15, 2007

■ A man arrested in the robbery of a Missouri bank has been indicted in U.S. District Court for Arkansas’ Eastern District in connection with two state bank robberies from last year. Currently jailed in Missouri’s Butler County, William White, 32, was indicted on charges stemming from holdups at the US Bank branch at 4311 E. Broadway St. in North Little Rock and the First State Bank branch at 1815 E. Oak St. in Conway, authoritie­s said. Those robberies occurred in August 2006. White took about $ 1,350 from the Conway bank and about $ 3,075 from the North Little Rock bank, according to the indictment.
