I-49 clos­ings set for this week

LOW­ELL — Plac­ing bridge beams over In­ter­state 49 will re­quire clos­ing all south­bound lanes for mul­ti­ple 15-minute pe­ri­ods in Ben­ton County this week, ac­cord­ing to Arkansas High­way and Trans­porta­tion De­part­ment of­fi­cials.

Work­ers will close the lanes be­tween 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. be­tween Wagon Wheel Road, Exit 76, in Spring­dale and Arkansas 264, Exit 78, in Low­ell. Traf­fic con­trol will be han­dled by the Arkansas State Po­lice. Work is ex­pected to take place from Wed­nes­day night through Satur­day morn­ing and July 24 through July 29.

Ad­vance warn­ing signs will be placed to no­tify traf­fic ap­proach­ing the clos­ings. The pub­lic is ad­vised to be cau­tious if trav­el­ing in this work zone and are en­cour­aged to find al­ter­na­tive routes to avoid the in­ter­state clo­sure. Traf­fic will be stopped prior to the ex­its to al­low ve­hi­cles to exit.

The project is part of the de­part­ment’s Con­nect­ing Arkansas Pro­gram and con­structs about four miles of the four-lane U.S. 412 North­ern By­pass, which ex­tends from I-49 to Arkansas 112.

Also this week, con­struc­tion on I-49 in Ben­tonville will re­quire day­time lane clos­ings on Arkansas 72.

Be­gin­ning Wed­nes­day, crews will be lay­ing pave­ment, which will re­quire east­bound and west­bound lanes of Arkansas 72 to al­ter­nately be closed be­tween McCol­lum Drive and Beau Terre Drive. The clos­ings will oc­cur dur­ing off-peak hours through July 26.

The project in­cludes widen­ing 3.5 miles of I-49 to three lanes in each di­rec­tion. The work ex­tends from U.S. 62/Arkansas 102 to Arkansas 72 and in­cludes con­struct­ing aux­il­iary lanes to­ward South­east Walton Boule­vard.
