I-49 closings set for this week
LOWELL — Placing bridge beams over Interstate 49 will require closing all southbound lanes for multiple 15-minute periods in Benton County this week, according to Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department officials.
Workers will close the lanes between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. between Wagon Wheel Road, Exit 76, in Springdale and Arkansas 264, Exit 78, in Lowell. Traffic control will be handled by the Arkansas State Police. Work is expected to take place from Wednesday night through Saturday morning and July 24 through July 29.
Advance warning signs will be placed to notify traffic approaching the closings. The public is advised to be cautious if traveling in this work zone and are encouraged to find alternative routes to avoid the interstate closure. Traffic will be stopped prior to the exits to allow vehicles to exit.
The project is part of the department’s Connecting Arkansas Program and constructs about four miles of the four-lane U.S. 412 Northern Bypass, which extends from I-49 to Arkansas 112.
Also this week, construction on I-49 in Bentonville will require daytime lane closings on Arkansas 72.
Beginning Wednesday, crews will be laying pavement, which will require eastbound and westbound lanes of Arkansas 72 to alternately be closed between McCollum Drive and Beau Terre Drive. The closings will occur during off-peak hours through July 26.
The project includes widening 3.5 miles of I-49 to three lanes in each direction. The work extends from U.S. 62/Arkansas 102 to Arkansas 72 and includes constructing auxiliary lanes toward Southeast Walton Boulevard.
