100 YEARS AGO July 21, 1917

■ The first of two men in Lit­tle Rock drawn yes­ter­day for the draft will not claim ex­emp­tion and both say they are will­ing to “do their bit.” One is Roy Sen­yard, 315 West Twen­ti­eth street, and the other is Carl F. Duerr, 1008 Ringo street, Sen­yard is in the West­ern Dis­trict and Duerr is in the Eastern Dis­trict. Their se­rial num­ber was 258. “I con­sider my­self a lucky man and feel highly hon­ored that my num­ber was drawn first,” Mr. Sen­yard said. “I am per­fectly will­ing to ‘do my bit,’” Mr. Duerr said last night.

50 YEARS AGO July 21, 1967

■ Win­ston Crock­ett Tal­ley, 28, of 701 West Thirty-third Street, North Lit­tle Rock, a for­mer con­vict at Tucker Prison Farm whose le­gal ac­tion led to changes in the rules on the use of the strap to dis­ci­pline pris­on­ers in the State Pen­i­ten­tiary, was ar­rested again early Thurs­day. Tal­ley and Thomas Car­roll McGill, 20, of 309 East Sev­enth Street, North lit­tle Rock, were ar­rested at 12:04 a.m. at Wake­field Vil­lage Esso Ser­vi­cen­ter at 4525 West Sixty-fifth Street af­ter the ser­vice sta­tion was bur­glar­ized, the po­lice said.

ARKANSAS CITY — A po­lice of­fi­cer’s wife dis­rupted jury se­lec­tion Mon­day in a mur­der and kid­nap­ping trial in De­sha County Cir­cuit Court when she told other po­ten­tial ju­rors that her hus­band had ar­rested the de­fen­dant sev­eral times. Ben­nie La­mar Cleve­land, 27, of McGe­hee is charged with cap­i­tal mur­der, kid­nap­ping, at­tempted mur­der, and theft of prop­erty in a December 1992 in­ci­dent at Cash’s Quik Check con­ve­nience store. Cleve­land is ac­cused of fa­tally shoot­ing clerk Michelle Nagel, 23, and kid­nap­ping his for­mer girl­friend, Paula Easter, 32, both of McGe­hee.

WEST MEM­PHIS — A cir­cuit court judge has ap­pointed two spe­cial pros­e­cu­tors to re­view an Arkansas State Po­lice in­ves­ti­ga­tion into the June 22 fa­tal po­lice shoot­ing of a 12-year-old West Mem­phis boy. Judge David Bur­nett of Osce­ola ap­pointed H.G. Fos­ter of Con­way as spe­cial pros­e­cu­tor and John “Jack” McQuary of Ben­ton as spe­cial deputy pros­e­cu­tor af­ter 2nd Ju­di­cial Dis­trict Pros­e­cut­ing At­tor­ney Brent Davis asked to be re­cused from the case. The state po­lice had yet to con­clude its in­ves­ti­ga­tion Fri­day.
