100 YEARS AGO July 22, 1917

■ Mayor Charles E. Tay­lor was cut twice with a small pocket knife and slightly in­jured by Dr. W. H. Tay­lor, a re­tired physi­cian liv­ing at 115 Arch street, about 10 o’clock yes­ter­day morn­ing. The af­fair oc­curred at Sec­ond and Louisiana street, dur­ing a fight, fol­low­ing an ar­gu­ment about sto­ries con­cern­ing the char­ac­ter of the mayor that had been cir­cu­lated dur­ing his trip to New York. Mayor Tay­lor is­sued a pub­lic state­ment, vig­or­ously deny­ing the truth of the ru­mors.

50 YEARS AGO July 22, 1967

■ With a herd of goats, two hound dogs, and about 40 spec­ta­tors look­ing on, the Port of Lit­tle Rock was ded­i­cated Fri­day. While the goats milled cu­ri­ously around the site, Mayor Borchert, mem­bers of the Port Au­thor­ity, Colonel Frank P. Bane, the Army district en­gi­neer, and City Man­ager An­cil M. Douthit turned the tra­di­tional first spades of dirt. The 151-acre site, lo­cated 5.3 miles down­stream from the Free­way Bridge, is at the end of Shelby Drive off Plan­ta­tion Drive.

25 YEARS AGO July 22, 1992

■ A state prison in­mate re­mains at large af­ter es­cap­ing from a hold­ing cell shortly af­ter his pa­role was re­voked Mon­day morn­ing, of­fi­cials said. War­rants have been is­sued for the ar­rest of Bobby L. Foun­tain, 28, of Lit­tle Rock, Depart­ment of Cor­rec­tion spokesman David White said Tues­day. White said there is no rea­son to be­lieve Foun­tain — who has a check­ered pa­role his­tory — would be armed and dan­ger­ous.

■ Six peo­ple died Fri­day in ve­hi­cle ac­ci­dents across Arkansas, in­clud­ing one in which a man fled from sher­iff’s deputies. Ben­jamin Thomas Webb, 28, of Con­way was wanted on a war­rant re­vok­ing his pa­role and had in­gre­di­ents to make metham­phetamine in his 1990 Ford van when Faulkner County sher­iff’s deputies tried to pull him over on Arkansas 286 not long af­ter 11:30 p.m., the sher­iff’s of­fice said. Alone in the van, Webb be­gan to slow down as if he was pulling over, then ac­cel­er­ated, at times driv­ing nearly 70 mph through ru­ral ar­eas, ac­cord­ing to the of­fice.
