In 1904 Helen Gould, heir to the railroad fortune of her father, Jay Gould, donated $15,000 to build a Railroad YMCA to provide lodging and support services to railroad workers. In addition to sleeping quarters, the building offered a cafeteria, reading room and sports equipment.
