100 YEARS AGO Aug. 14, 1917

■ Thomas Fite, aged 15, charged with assaulting a nine-year-old girl Friday afternoon near Forest park, was given an indetermin­ate sentence in the Reform School in the Juvenile Court yesterday. The case was transferre­d from the Municipal Court. The girl’s name was said to be Helen Russon, but Mrs. J. Erickson, juvenile probation officer, yesterday said this was not the girl’s name. The Simon-Binet tests on mentality were given to both the boy and the girl. The boy was found to have a brain of a nine-year-old boy. The girl was found to be normal.

50 YEARS AGO Aug. 14, 1967

■ A man posing as a representa­tive of the United Fund Agency robbed the Butler Shoe Store, 509 Main Street, of about $600 about 7:40 p.m. Saturday after first visiting the store the day before and ordering 32 pairs of children’s shoes. Ray Bates of 200 Security Street, who operates the store, told the police a man identified himself as the representa­tive of the United Fund Agency who had ordered 32 pairs of shoes Friday, to be picked up Saturday. He then handed Bates a note which said: “This is a holdup. I have your wife and daughter captive.”

25 YEARS AGO Aug. 14, 1992

■ Parole was denied Thursday to Robert Wayne Simpson of Russellvil­le, who — at the age of 14 — killed three family members, supposedly while influenced by a fantasy game character. The state Board of Parole and Community Rehabilita­tion unanimousl­y rejected parole for Simpson, now 24, Carol Bohannan, board secretary, said. Simpson received a 38-year sentence in 1983 after pleading guilty to shooting to death his mother, Margaret Simpson, 39; his sister, Jennifer Simpson, 7; and his grandfathe­r, Thomas Simpson, 75, on April 4, 1983.

■ A Rosston man appeared in Nevada County Circuit Court on Monday facing two counts of capital murder in the shooting deaths of his ex-wife and her husband in front of his own 11-year-old daughter. Kelvin Box, 39, told police that he tackled his ex-wife, Tracey Lambert, 31, and then shot her three times in the face, just after he fired four shots to the back of the head of Jerome Lambert, 36, Nevada County Sheriff Bobby Carlton said. The shooting occurred about 8:40 p.m. Saturday at 4376 U.S. Highway 371 in Rosston, outside the home of one of Box’s relatives, Carlton said.
