■ WARREN — After being out only 19 minutes, the jury in the case of Charlie Hargis, charged with the killing of Warren Norman, a negro, near here last May, this morning returned a verdict of not guilty. It required eight hours today to secure a jury to try Jim Davidson, charged with the killing of Jim Temple, his brother-inlaw, on the same day that the negro was killed. Just as Judge Butler finished outlining the case and the first witness called, Mrs. Temple, widow of the slain man, became hysterical and her screams could be heard blocks away.

■ Sen. Dale Bumpers, D-Ark, told about 40 disadvantaged children Saturday to turn off the television and read instead. “If you read books and don’t watch so much television, you can learn up to 5,000 words a year,” Bumpers told 10-, 11-, and 12-year-olds from the Shepherd’s Ranch program during a visit to the state Capitol. “But if you plop down in front of the television in the afternoon instead, you’ll be in that group that learns 2,000 to 3,000 words a year.” Shepherd’s Ranch is a threeweek summer program at the 4H Center in Ferndale and includes field trips and farm-related work.

■ A California man slit his wrists and jumped onto Interstate 630 from an overpass Wednesday in Little Rock. He survived all of his injuries, police said. According to a Little Rock Police Department report, Ausancio Lopez, 26, of San Diego climbed up on the railing of the Battery Street overpass about 10:35 a.m. Kevin Sharp, 44, of Brashear, Texas, saw Lopez strike the pavement and called 911 at 10:36 a.m., according to the report. When police arrived, they found Lopez on his back on the interstate’s shoulder. He “was responsive and stated his name and that he could not move,” according to the report.
