■ H. G. Reed, who lives about two miles west of Forest Park, a switchman for the Missouri Pacific, was seriously injured about 11:45 o’clock last night when the engine on which he was riding collided with a team driven by Roy Wilson, 300 East Third Street, on the Argenta end of the Baring Cross bridge. Wilson was driving two horses, one of which was slightly hurt. Wilson was not injured and the buggy was only slightly damaged.

■ The Arkansas State Police raided four Hot Springs gambling casinos at 3:30 a.m. Thursday and confiscated an estimated $70,000 worth of slot machines, dice tables, black-jack tables, dice, cards, chips and cash. Lynn A. Davis, the new State Police director, called a news conference at State Police headquarters at 12:30 p.m. Thursday to announce the results of the raids. Davis said the State Police had obtained information about casino-type gambling and operations at Hot Springs and had gone there Wednesday evening to “see what the situation was.”

BENTON — Prosecuting Attorney Dan Harmon of Benton “tricked” two men implicated in a capital murder case into testifying against each other, the defense attorney for one testified Monday. Saline Circuit Court Judge John W. Cole of Sheridan (Grant County) denied defense attorney Joe Kelly Hardin’s request to suppress evidence in this case. He ruled Harmon acted in good faith with Hardin in a series of legal maneuvers that could lead to a Missouri man losing his immunity from prosecution.

PINE BLUFF — A 15-yearold boy was shot and killed Thursday night by a pawnshop owner who said the teenager tried to break into his business, according to police. Taron Hopkins, 15, of Pine Bluff was found about 11:30 p.m., facedown beside a small pile of dirt inside a fenced-in area connected to Chuck Smith’s Pawn Shop at 3621 W. Sixth Ave. Jefferson County Deputy Coroner Chad Kelly pronounced him dead at the scene. Chuck Smith, the store’s owner, told police he shot the teenager with a .38-caliber revolver as the boy and others tried to break into the store, according to a release from the Pine Bluff Police Department.
