ARKADELPHIA — The trial of Jesse Hays, charged with first degree murder, opened here this morning. Many Okolona residents are witnesses. Hays shot and killed Renow Cargile on the main street of Okolona February 24, following a quarrel between the men over a rooster fight. Selection of the jury occupied all morning and examination of witnesses did not begin until 2:30 o’clock this afternoon.

■ Little Rock Patrolman Lloyd Wilburn Worthy was buried Sunday after a funeral in the small Lonoke County town of Allport that was attended by an overflow crowd of some 1,800 people, many of them police officers who had worked with him. The funeral for the Negro policeman, who was shot to death Sept. 2 at Little Rock, was at the George Washington Carver school because a crowd had been expected — but nothing like the number that came to pay last respects. The school has a small auditorium that seats about 200; the rest of the crowd was packed into adjacent classrooms and hallways, into the schoolyard, and even into yards as much as a block away.

■ Charges against a North Little Rock man accused of molesting five boys without force should be dismissed because he isn’t the alleged victims’ guardian, an attorney argued Thursday. A Pulaski County deputy prosecutor said the issue is similar to one raised earlier this year, when a circuit judge said no state law prohibited a teacher from fondling a 16-yearold student’s breast unless force was used. Garry Dwaine White, 48, of 4504 Austin St. is charged with three counts of violating a minor in the first degree and two counts of violating a minor in the second degree.

■ A death-row inmate lost a bid for clemency Monday when it was rejected without comment by the Arkansas Board of Parole. Unless Gov. Mike Beebe decides to disregard the board’s recommendation and grants clemency to Jack H. Jones Jr., only a pending request for a stay in federal district court could allow Jones to avoid being put to death by lethal injection on Oct. 16. In June 1995, Jones raped and killed 35-year-old Mary Phillips, a Bald Knob resident, before beating her 11-year-old daughter Lacey nearly to death. In 1996, Jones was convicted of capital murder and rape and sentenced to death.
