UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS AT FORT SMITH
Twelve students will participate in the Chancellor’s Leadership Council scholarship program at the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith’s during the 2017-18 school year. The competitive program is for students demonstrating leadership capabilities and strong academic performance.
Students selected for the scholarship enroll in a three-hour leadership course taught by UAFS Chancellor Paul B. Beran, with assistance from Jordan Hale, director of government and university relations. Students also accept leadership roles on campus and complete service projects in the community.
Local students in this year’s class include Alec Armstrong of Greenwood, history major with social studies education, son of Jennifer and Dustin Smith; Londan Barlow of Van Buren, radiography and sonography major, daughter of Kelly and Derek Barlow; Monet McGill of Fort Smith, secondary education major, daughter of Courtney Ross and Herbert McGill; Cristina Recinos of Fort Smith, international business major, daughter of Lorena Guevara and Jose Recinos; Cindy Sackpraseuth of Van Buren, nursing major, and daughter of Kristina and Johny Sackpraseuth; Garrett Spain of Greenwood, business administration major, son of Michelle and Milton Spain; Haylie West of Prairie Grove, biochemistry major. daughter of Bill West and Natasha Campbell; Darian Wilson of Greenwood, mathematics major with education, and daughter of Angela and Darren Wilson; Drew Young of Charleston, nursing major, son of Jamie and Ronni Young.
JOHN BROWN UNIVERSITY
John Brown University in Siloam Springs was awarded a $25,000 grant from the Roy and Christine Sturgis Charitable Trust of Texas, Bank of America, toward the university’s $6 million renovation of Mayfield Residence Hall, the university’s historic women’s dormitory that has housed more than 10,000 women since its opening in 1964.
Mayfield’s renovation will include new bathrooms and plumbing, new decore for all of the common areas, a new HVAC system and a modern fire suppression system. In addition, each resident room will have a sink, sound-resistant walls, LED lighting and modular furniture for residents to maximize and personalize their living spaces. The renovation began in the spring and will be completed by summer.
The Roy and Christine Sturgis Charitable Trust was established in 1981 to support and promote quality educational, cultural, human services and health care programming for all people.
