■ The Southern Trust Company today celebrates its twelfth anniversary, having been founded September 30, 1905, by the late Judge W. M. Kavanaugh. From a small beginning in small rented quarters, with a paid up capital of $16,219, it has expanded to a paidup capital of $500,000 and to have, it is claimed, the largest capital and surplus of any state bank or trust company in Arkansas.

■ The Rock Island Lines is petitioning the Interstate Commerce Commission for authority to discontinue the operation of westbound train 21 and eastbound train 22, which would eliminate the Rock Island passenger service in Arkansas. The reason is the Post Office Department’s discontinuance of railway postoffice service, which the Rock Island said would cost it $1.2 million worth of mail business a year on the two trains. 25 YEARS AGO Oct. 1, 1992 ■ Randy Powell, general manager of Park Plaza mall, took issue Wednesday with media reports of a weekend brawl in the popular shopping mecca, again denying that any gunshots were fired inside the building. Powell also said about 40 youths were involved in the fight — not the 75 to 100 reported in news accounts.

■ One of two men facing the death penalty in connection with a shooting four years ago in Pine Bluff will go before a federal jury in Little Rock starting today. Jurors are expected to spend about three weeks listening to testimony to decide whether Vertis Clay should be convicted of committing murder during the course of drug trafficking. Clay, Calvin Stovall and Darryl Walker were jointly accused in a federal indictment of killing Darryl Johnson of Pine Bluff, a purported co-conspirator of theirs in a drug deal.
