Tuesday’s highlights
CLASS 7A GIRLS
1st title since 1982
Fayetteville sophomore Mary Houston defeated Kate Files of Fort Smith Southside 6-0, 6-0 to earn the Class 7A girls singles state title, and the Lady Bulldogs won their first team championship since 1982. Houston did not lose a game in her three state tournament matches.
CLASS 7A BOYS
Another for Catholic
Little Rock Catholic’s Parker Stearns won his third consecutive Class 7A boys singles title by defeating Fayetteville’s Jake Sweeney 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. Catholic’s Henry Nolan and Steven Weeks beat teammates Jackson Davis and Harrison Cook 6-7, 7-5, 6-1 for the doubles championship, and the Rockets won their third team title in a row with 19 points. Fayetteville and Little Rock tied for second with six points each.
CLASS 6A Jonesboro boys, girls win
Jonesboro won both the boys and girls Class 6A team championships. Carlson Bennage of West Memphis defeated Siloam Springs’ Orest Los for the boys singles title, while Mountain Home’s Emily Heide won her second girls singles crown, beating Greenwood’s Olivia Gaston.
CLASS 5A
PA in a near sweep
Pulaski Academy won its third consecutive Class 5A boys team title, while the girls claimed their first outright title since 2010. PA’s Foster Rogers won the boys singles crown, while Thea Rice won the girls singles and Caroline Gibbens and Abby Minton took the girls doubles for PA. Blake Wooldridge and Noah Ross of Hot Springs Lakeside won the boys doubles
