Canvases yield donations

Society supports programs

Sandy and University of Arkansas Chancellor Joe Steinmetz opened the Fowler House Garden and Conservatory on the Fayetteville campus on Oct. 20 to welcome nearly 400 Chancellor’s Society members. The reception celebrated the group’s generosity to the university.

The giving society was founded in 1989 and is part of the university’s annual fund. Gifts to the society are separate from those made to the Razorback Foundation, and donors have the option of directing their gifts to any college, school, program or scholarship or donating to the Chancellor’s Fund. The society’s membership totals approximately 1,000.

Those helping support UA scholarships and programs included Evelyn and Dennis Shaw, Brenda and Courtney Crouch, SuSu and Robert Ross, Deborah and Greg Temple, Sudie and Walt Henderson, Margaret Rutherford, Mary Ann and Reed Greenwood and Monica and Victor Wilson, Chancellor’s Society honorary co-chairmen.

Some 130 professional and amateur artists provided more than 200 petite paintings and other works on 5-inch-by-5-inch canvases for the 15th annual 5x5 Soiree. The benefit for the Arts Center of the Ozarks took place on Oct. 26 at the center in downtown Springdale. Works were on display throughout the center and available for purchase by guests via silent auction. Proceeds will help support the center and its community art programs.

Programs at the arts center include concerts, classes, performance opportunities in plays and choirs and artistic development.

Next up for the arts center are concerts by the Latin American Ensemble of the University of Arkansas on Thursday and Main Street Music Night with Bayard Blain on Saturday.
