Our common beliefs

-

Recently, I was traveling and came upon a group of people. I asked if I could join them, and they responded, “Are you a Democrat or a Republican?”

The question caught me off guard, as it didn’t used to matter. I thought for a second and responded, “I’ll tell you what I believe, and then you can guess what I am.”

“I believe that all men and women are created equal. I believe we all have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, regardless of our sex, ethnic origin, or religious beliefs. I believe we should not be subjected to racism, sexism, or any other form of discrimination. I believe that diversity makes us stronger, and we should defend and support our diversity. I believe that peaceful protests in support of these beliefs are integral to us achieving and maintaining our liberties and freedom. I believe in the vital need of free press to help ensure our continuing freedom and to hold those in power accountable. I believe people should be held to the truth, and those that lie for their own gain or to satisfy their own egos must be held accountable and not get by with it. That’s what I believe, so what am I?”

As I heard the guesses start to come in, I stopped them and said, “Wait, I’ll tell you what I am. I am an American. Period. And as Americans, I believe we should share these common beliefs. They should and must be defended above any party line, by all of us, including our elected officials. If our elected officials don’t believe in and work to uphold these ideals, we should not allow them to continue in office. Holding our officials accountable is our No. 1 job as voters. It should go above and beyond any party lines. If we accept any less, we are not supporting our country and our Constitution. That’s doubly true for our elected officials.”

After some murmurs, the group said they would like me to join them. I wonder what political party they were. I never asked.
