Cosper continues her good work for Arkansas women

The University of Arkansas, Fayettevil­le rebounded from a three-point loss Friday night with a 69-60 victory over New Mexico State on Saturday at the UTEP Classic in El Paso, Texas.

Senior Devin Cosper, who scored 22 points in Friday’s 6461 loss to the host school, had her third career double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds against the Aggies. It was her sixth consecutiv­e game in double figures and her fourth with 20 or more points.

Kiara Williams had 11 points and 11 rebounds for Arkansas (4-2), while Malica Monk led the team with a game-high 22 points.

The Aggies (2-4) led 25-23 at halftime, but the Razorbacks outscored them 24-15 in the third quarter to take a 47-40 lead into the fourth. Williams did most of her damage in the second half, scoring 10 points and grabbing 8 rebounds over the final two quarters.

Arkansas led by as many as 11 in the third quarter, but the Aggies took advantage of a season-high 18 Arkansas turnovers to cut the lead to 56-54 with 3:30 left in the game. Monk’s three-pointer stretched the lead to five, which the Razorbacks increased to as many as 10 before the end of the game.

Despite shooting 35.7 percent from the field, the Razorbacks forced a season-high 18 turnovers and outrebound­ed the Aggies 55-41, including 2214 on the offensive end.

SUN BELT WOMEN PITTSBURGH 87, ARKANSAS STATE 47

Pittsburgh (5-1) held Arkansas State University (2-3) to 23.9 percent fieldgoal shooting in its 40-point blowout at the Petersen Events Center in Pittsburgh.

The Panthers shot 52.3 percent from the field and had six players score 10 or more points, led by Yacine Diop’s 14.

ASU shot just 23.9 percent from the field, including 17.9 percent (7 of 39) from three-point range. The Red Wolves had no player score in double figures and were led by Starr Taylor’s 9 points on 4-of-10 shooting from the field and 1 of 3 at the free-throw line.

The Red Wolves outrebound­ed the Panthers 47-30, including 22-6 on the offensive end, but committed 19 turnovers to 9 for Pittsburgh.

The Panthers blocked 13 shots, including a game-high 3 by Cara Judkins in just 5 minutes of playing time.

SWAC WOMEN DAYTON 81, ARKANSAS-PINE BLUFF 43

The University of Arkansas- Pine Bluff (2-2) was held to 23.6 percent shooting from the field and fell by 38 points to Dayton (5-1) at UD Arena in Dayton, Ohio.

Shawntayla Harris came off the bench to score a team-high 15 points for the Golden Lions. UAPB had 27 points from its bench as its starters scored 16 on 5-of-30 field-goal shooting.

Dayton shot 45.9 percent from the field and had four players score 10 or more points, led by JaVonna Layfield’s game-high 19.

The Flyers outrebound­ed the Golden Lions 49-33 and forced 20 turnovers.

UAPB was 2 of 15 ( 13.3 percent) from three-point range.

SUN BELT MEN ROBERT MORRIS 78, UALR 64

Despite shooting 51.1 percent (24 of 47) from the field, the University of Arkansas at Little Rock remained winless ( 0- 5) after its loss to Robert Morris (3-3) at the Jack Stephens Center in Little Rock.

It was the third consecutiv­e victory for the Colonials, while it marked the first time the Trojans have started a season 0-5 since 1967-1968 when they began 0-12.

Andre Jones scored a career-high 15 points to lead UALR on 7-of-13 shooting, but the Trojans weren’t very good on three-point attempts (5 of 14) or at the free-throw line (11 of 20).

Jones was the only Trojan to score in double figures as the team’s starters combined to shoot 18 of 32 (56.3 percent) from the field.

UALR’s Oliver Black had a game-high 12 rebounds, including 10 on the defensive end.

The Trojans committed 21 turnovers the Colonials turned into 35 points.

Robert Morris, which had a 20-point lead in the second half, was led by Dachon Burke’s 17 points. Matty McConnell and Koby Thomas each scored 15 for the Colonials, who led 35-29 at halftime.

SOUTHLAND MEN TULSA 92, CENTRAL ARKANSAS 72

The University of Central Arkansas (3-3) got off to a sluggish start during Saturday’s 11 a.m. tip-off at the Reynolds Center in Tulsa and eventually fell to the Golden Hurricane (3-3).

The Bears were coming off two consecutiv­e victories but shot just 33.3 percent from the field in trailing 47-32 at halftime. UCA trimmed the deficit to 11 points on two occasions in the second half but could get no closer.

UCA, which was led by Jordan Howard’s 23 points, shot 37.5 percent from the field. Mathieu Kamba added 12 points and a team-high 12 rebounds, while Tanner Schmit came off the bench to score 10 points.

Tulsa’s Corey Henderson had a game-high 24 points on 8-of-12 shooting, including 4 of 7 on three-pointers. DaQuan Jeffries added 20 points, while Junior Etou had 16 points and 12 rebounds.
