Huntsville defeats Pea Ridge

FARMINGTON — Huntsville didn’t look like a team with a losing record Thursday night.

The Lady Eagles used balanced scoring and a 9-0 run to defeat Pea Ridge 46-34 in the first round of the Tony Chachere’s Classic at the Farmington gym. Sophomore center Josie Sisk scored 17 points and senior guard Maci Campbell 13 for Huntsville (4-7), which pulled away after Pea Ridge (1-3) got to within two points in the third quarter.

Sisk scored twice inside and Campbell added a three-point basket to lead the 9-0 surge.

Forward Kara Drewyer contributed a rebound basket and finished with 10 points for Huntsville while Hollyn Davis led Pea Ridge with eight points.

Tournament play will continue today and Saturday with four games each day.

“Our post play has gotten a lot better,” Huntsville coach Charles Berry said. “Sisk is just a sophomore and we’ve got a point guard (Campbell), who is pretty good.

“We shot the ball adequately and forced some turnovers that led to baskets.”

Huntsville’s record is deceiving, as it includes games against Class 7A schools Bryant, Rogers High, Bentonville High and Bentonville West. But the Lady Eagles could challenge again once 4A-1 Conference play resumes.

“We played four 7A schools and were competitive in three of them,” Berry said. “We’re getting better.”

Huntsville was in control for most of the game except for a stretch in the third quarter. Davis hit a 3-pointer to pull Pea Ridge to within 24-22 but that’s when Huntsville answered with its 9-0 run.

The Lady Blackhawks made another run in the fourth quarter, but Sisk responded with a three-point play and Campbell found Drewyer inside for a basket to to give Huntsville a 3828 lead with four minutes to play.
