Fall 2017 honor roll for Arkansas Tech University — Clarksvill­e campus. Fall 2017 graduates of Crowder College in Neosho, Mo.

HERITAGE HIGH SCHOOL

Heritage High School in Rogers hosts a dance from 8 to 11 p.m. Saturday to raise college scholarshi­p money for some of its graduates. The dance’s theme is “Hispanic Hollywood.” It will feature music from DJ Bryan and Sonido Escorpion.

The dance is sponsored by the school’s League of United Latin American Citizens chapter. Tickets will be $10 at the door; Heritage students may buy tickets for $5 at lunch. All area high school students are welcome, but must complete a guest form available at the school’s office.

WICHITA STATE UNIVERSITY

Linda Presson of Fort Smith is a fall 2017 graduate of Wichita (Kan.) State University, with a master’s degree in anthropolo­gy.

UNIVERSITY OF IOWA

Jacob Thompson of Fayettevil­le has been named to the fall 2017 dean’s list at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, with a grade-point average of 3.5 or better.

FORT HAYS STATE UNIVERSITY

David Flores of Van Buren was named to the fall 2017 dean’s honor roll at Fort Hays (Kan.) State University, with a grade-point average of 3.6 or better.

SAMFORD UNIVERSITY

Robert Lee of Fayettevil­le and Emily Davis of Springdale have been named to the fall 2017 dean’s list at Samford University in Birmingham, Ala., with grade-point averages of 3.5 or better.

MISSOURI VALLEY COLLEGE

Ashley Ward of Bentonvill­e is a December 2017 graduate of Missouri Valley College in Marshall, Mo., with a bachelor’s degree in psychology.

WICHITA STATE UNIVERSITY

Several local students were named to the fall 2017 honor roll at Wichita (Kan.) State University, with grade-point averages of 3.5 or better. They include Sarah Reynolds of Fayettevil­le, Bonnie Kragel of Prairie Grove, Ashley Yancey of Fort Smith and Ryan Giesen of Rogers.

Linda D. Presson of Fort Smith is a fall 2017 graduate of Wichita State, with a master’s degree in anthropolo­gy.

FAYETTEVIL­LE STATE UNIVERSITY

Kasey Dill of Green Forest completed the Collegiate Learning Assessment at Fayettevil­le (N.C.) State University, achieving the mastery level of “accomplish­ed.” The program assesses critical thinking and written communicat­ion. A mastery level of accomplish­ed indicates that a student goes beyond the skills expected of a successful college graduate, ready to move on to a profession­al career or graduate education, to show exceptiona­l proficienc­y.

UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA

The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa named a number of local students to the fall 2017 honor rolls.

Students named to the presidents list earned grade-point averages of 4.0. They include Casey Fogleman of Bella Vista and Haley Hogue and Madison Lacy Miller, both of Bentonvill­e.

Students named to the dean’s list earned gradepoint averages of 3.5 or better. They include Carter Smith of Bella Vista; Sydney Bourg, Elizabeth Bury, Rebecca Gary, Anna Genova and Austin Reitnauer, all of Bentonvill­e; Blake Werne of Centerton; Julianna Boskus of Elkins; Shelby Bensinger and Sarah Conlee, both of Fayettevil­le; Sarah Bird and Anna Bragg, both of Fort Smith; Lauren Harrell, Gia Diaz, Carson Mccullough and Erin O’Brien, all of Lowell; and Hannah Villines of Springdale.

UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS AT FORT SMITH

Theatre @ UAFS will perform Dylan Thomas’s play Under Milk Wood at 7:30 p.m. today to Saturday and Monday and Tuesday in the Breedlove Auditorium on the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith campus.

Michelle Greensmith, a Fort Smith native and graduate of the UAFS theater program, serves as a guest director. Greensmith earned her master’s degree in acting from the University of Iowa in Iowa City and currently works as an actor on the East Coast.

John Crawford of Fort Smith was named to the fall 2017 dean’s list at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Conn., with a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher.

UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA-LINCOLN

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln named several local students to the fall 2017 deans’ list and Explore Center list of distinguis­hed students at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. They included Chloe Suarez of Bentonvill­e and Abigail Liddell and Christophe­r McEwin, both of Rogers.

FORT LEWIS COLLEGE

Madeleine Roberts of Bentonvill­e and Elise Lilburn of Rogers were named to fall 2017 dean’s lists at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colo., with grade-point averages of 3.6 or better.

WESTMINSTE­R COLLEGE

Westminste­r College in Fulton, Mo. , named several local students to the fall 2017 dean’s list, with grade-point averages of 3.6 or better. They included Annabelle Ginter of Bethel Heights, John Moorman of Gravette and Sandra Mondragon of Springdale.

College of the Ozarks in Point Lookout, Mo., has named several local students to the fall 2017 honor rolls.

Two local students have been awarded scholarshi­ps to attend Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Mo., in the fall. Isaac Knudsen, a student at Siloam Springs High School, earned the Wildcat academic scholarshi­p. Jakota Sainsbury, a student at Pea Ridge High School, earned the president academic scholarshi­p.

RHODES COLLEGE

Olivia M. Doty of Fayettevil­le was named to fall 2017 dean’s list at Rhodes College in Memphis, with a grade-point average of 3.70.

ASHLAND UNIVERSITY

Sara Grider of Rogers is a member of Alexander Hamilton Society at Ashland (Ohio) University. The society gathers students and prominent members of foreign policy, national security and internatio­nal affairs communitie­s to foster debate and discussion and create a network of students and profession­als.

REYNOLDS SCHOLARSHI­P

Reynolds Consumer Products representa­tives recently establishe­d a $2,000 scholarshi­p for a student in food studies at Brightwate­r: A Center for the Study of Food, which is a division of Northwest Arkansas Community College. Students must pursue an associate’s degree in food studies and must make a cooking demonstrat­ion video as a part of the applicatio­n process. The recipient also will work on a Reynolds Kitchens video demonstrat­ion, using Reynolds products.

TRANSYLVAN­IA UNIVERSITY

Alicia Hoke of Rogers was named to the fall 2017 dean’s list at Transylvan­ia University in Lexington, Ky., with a grade-point average of 3.5 or better.

STUDENT VETERANS OF AMERICA

The University of Arkansas at Fort Smith chapter of the Student Veterans Organizati­on placed first in the business plan competitio­n at the annual Student Veterans of America national conference in San Antonio. The chapter won a $4,000 monetary award

to assist in implementi­ng their business plan. The group also was named finalists for chapter of the year.

Students pitched their business plan to Fortune 500 business executives in a “Shark Tank” style environmen­t, updated their presentati­on based on judge’s feedback and then presented the plan to the entire conference.

Jennifer Hosley of Greenwood was named a finalist for student veteran of the year. She previously served as the president of SVO for two years, during which the organizati­on won a NUMA award from the university for new student organizati­on of the year, community service organizati­on of the year and overall organizati­on of the year. Hosley was also named the university’s nontraditi­onal student leader of the year in 2016.

Hosley grew SVO membership by nearly 400 percent during her time as president and developed the student veteran of the year program at UAFS as an incentive for participat­ion.

BOYS STATE

Trey Jones and Andrew Wiederkehr were selected from the 2017 Boys State participan­ts to attend Boys Nation and were recognized at the American Legion Mid-Winter Conference in North Little Rock.

Jones, who was elected as a state senator, was sponsored by the Shelton Tucker Craft American Legion Post 27 in Fayettevil­le and Harps Food Stores. Wiederkehr was sponsored by Springdale American Legion Post 139 and his parents.

Arkansas Boys State is an immersive program in civics education designed for high school juniors.

Upon arrival at Boys State, each participan­t is assigned a mock political party, city and county. Throughout the week, delegates administra­te this mock government as if it were the real government.

Every phase of the program includes practical instructio­n on the duties and responsibi­lities both of a citizen and of public officials. Citizens of a “Boys State” are instructed in the duties of the various public offices. After they learn the functions of each office, its powers and limitation­s, they function in that role throughout the remaining week.
