HERITAGE HIGH SCHOOL
Heritage High School in Rogers hosts a dance from 8 to 11 p.m. Saturday to raise college scholarship money for some of its graduates. The dance’s theme is “Hispanic Hollywood.” It will feature music from DJ Bryan and Sonido Escorpion.
The dance is sponsored by the school’s League of United Latin American Citizens chapter. Tickets will be $10 at the door; Heritage students may buy tickets for $5 at lunch. All area high school students are welcome, but must complete a guest form available at the school’s office.

Kasey Dill of Green Forest completed the Collegiate Learning Assessment at Fayetteville (N.C.) State University, achieving the mastery level of “accomplished.” The program assesses critical thinking and written communication. A mastery level of accomplished indicates that a student goes beyond the skills expected of a successful college graduate, ready to move on to a professional career or graduate education, to show exceptional proficiency.

The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa named a number of local students to the fall 2017 honor rolls.

Theatre @ UAFS will perform Dylan Thomas’s play Under Milk Wood at 7:30 p.m. today to Saturday and Monday and Tuesday in the Breedlove Auditorium on the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith campus.
Michelle Greensmith, a Fort Smith native and graduate of the UAFS theater program, serves as a guest director. Greensmith earned her master’s degree in acting from the University of Iowa in Iowa City and currently works as an actor on the East Coast.

Two local students have been awarded scholarships to attend Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Mo., in the fall. Isaac Knudsen, a student at Siloam Springs High School, earned the Wildcat academic scholarship. Jakota Sainsbury, a student at Pea Ridge High School, earned the president academic scholarship.
RHODES COLLEGE
Olivia M. Doty of Fayetteville was named to fall 2017 dean’s list at Rhodes College in Memphis, with a grade-point average of 3.70.
ASHLAND UNIVERSITY
Sara Grider of Rogers is a member of Alexander Hamilton Society at Ashland (Ohio) University. The society gathers students and prominent members of foreign policy, national security and international affairs communities to foster debate and discussion and create a network of students and professionals.
REYNOLDS SCHOLARSHIP
Reynolds Consumer Products representatives recently established a $2,000 scholarship for a student in food studies at Brightwater: A Center for the Study of Food, which is a division of Northwest Arkansas Community College. Students must pursue an associate’s degree in food studies and must make a cooking demonstration video as a part of the application process. The recipient also will work on a Reynolds Kitchens video demonstration, using Reynolds products.

TRANSYLVANIA UNIVERSITY
Alicia Hoke of Rogers was named to the fall 2017 dean’s list at Transylvania University in Lexington, Ky., with a grade-point average of 3.5 or better.
STUDENT VETERANS OF AMERICA
The University of Arkansas at Fort Smith chapter of the Student Veterans Organization placed first in the business plan competition at the annual Student Veterans of America national conference in San Antonio. The chapter won a $4,000 monetary award
to assist in implementing their business plan. The group also was named finalists for chapter of the year.
Students pitched their business plan to Fortune 500 business executives in a “Shark Tank” style environment, updated their presentation based on judge’s feedback and then presented the plan to the entire conference.
Jennifer Hosley of Greenwood was named a finalist for student veteran of the year. She previously served as the president of SVO for two years, during which the organization won a NUMA award from the university for new student organization of the year, community service organization of the year and overall organization of the year. Hosley was also named the university’s nontraditional student leader of the year in 2016.
Hosley grew SVO membership by nearly 400 percent during her time as president and developed the student veteran of the year program at UAFS as an incentive for participation.
BOYS STATE
Trey Jones and Andrew Wiederkehr were selected from the 2017 Boys State participants to attend Boys Nation and were recognized at the American Legion Mid-Winter Conference in North Little Rock.
Jones, who was elected as a state senator, was sponsored by the Shelton Tucker Craft American Legion Post 27 in Fayetteville and Harps Food Stores. Wiederkehr was sponsored by Springdale American Legion Post 139 and his parents.
Arkansas Boys State is an immersive program in civics education designed for high school juniors.
Upon arrival at Boys State, each participant is assigned a mock political party, city and county. Throughout the week, delegates administrate this mock government as if it were the real government.
Every phase of the program includes practical instruction on the duties and responsibilities both of a citizen and of public officials. Citizens of a “Boys State” are instructed in the duties of the various public offices. After they learn the functions of each office, its powers and limitations, they function in that role throughout the remaining week.
