ARKADELPHIA — R. W. Huie Jr. has returned here after two weeks spent in the field of the Little Rock conference in the interest of the fund being raised for Henderson-Brown College. He says the campaign is a success thus far and undoubtedly will be at the close if the Methodist people in other sections show the same interest as the people of Camden, Monticello, and other such Arkansas districts.

■ The House of Representatives quietly approved two minimum wage bills Thursday, virtually assuring enactment of the state’s first general minimum wage law. All that remains for final passage of the bills by the legislature is for the Senate to concur in relatively mild amendments placed on the bills in the House. SB 62 by Senator Richard Earl Griffin of Crossett passed the House 92 to 3. SB 61, written by the administration and sponsored by Senator Max Howell of Little Rock and four others, passed 82 to 4.

PINE BLUFF — Dr. Paul L. Smith of Pine Bluff has been charged with failing to report child abuse or neglect in connection with an examination of bite marks on April Pruitt, 2, of Pine Bluff. April later died of what authorities believed was abuse. The child died Dec. 12, 1992, at a Little Rock hospital of injuries suffered when her mother, Martha Ann Williams, 30, and her boyfriend, Bobby Joe Knight, 32, both of Pine Bluff, hit her head on the uncarpeted floor of their living rooms while swinging her by her heels.

■ Several Park Hill businesses in North Little Rock drew the line at G-strings, challenging a Cupids Lingerie store that was headed for the historic district even though the proposal fit city zoning laws. The fervor proved too much to overcome for Little Rock based Cupids, causing its owners to turn their search for a site elsewhere in North Little Rock, a store spokesman said Friday. “We looked at it, and we were going to move forward,” Cupids controller Stephanie Frakes said of the original plan to lease part of a building at the corner of John F. Kennedy Boulevard and D Avenue. Word of the plans got out, and opposition began to form. “They got their panties in a wad,” Frakes said.
