■ John Myers, a librarian at Union College in New York, said he was cataloging old books when he found an envelope containing a lock of hair, labeled as George Washington’s, tucked in the pages of a grimy, leather-bound almanac for the year 1793.

■ Aaron Penman, a Republican candidate for a Maryland House seat, held a campaign fundraiser that included raffling off an AR-15 rifle, despite criticism that it was insensitiv­e after a gunman used the same type of weapon to kill 17 people at a Florida high school last week.

■ Rosalynn Carter, 90, the former first lady, is recovering at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, where she will remain for several days, after a successful surgery to remove scar tissue from a portion of her small intestine.

■ Brandon Harris, 49, was arrested in Oklahoma on manslaught­er and drug charges after, police say, he supplied his wife with methamphet­amine and then after a physical altercatio­n bound her until she lost consciousn­ess and died.

■ David Pope, executive director of a land trust committed to preserving the scenic character of St. Simons Island, Ga., said the $1 million that someone donated anonymousl­y toward the group’s $4 million fundraisin­g goal will help “ensure that the St. Simons we love is protected for the next generation and the next.”

■ Jamie Peyton of the University of California, Davis’ veterinari­an school said fish skins stitched to the paws of two badly burned bears helped heal their wounds after they were injured in the largest wildfire in California history, adding that the animals are now settling back into their home in the wild.

■ Harrison Edell, a Dallas Zoo official, said a female hippo that gave birth to her first calf did not help the newborn to the surface of the pool soon enough and that staff members were unable to safely assist, resulting in the baby hippopotam­us’s death.

■ Pepsi Kolar, 41, and Scott Wilson, 38, were arrested after Knox County, Tenn., deputies searching a home found pills, marijuana and drug parapherna­lia, and Kolar told them that she and Wilson knowingly allowed youths to “partake in the use of illegal substances,” court records show.

■ Jacob Wray, 27, who is accused of shooting at a suburban St. Louis sheriff’s deputy and faces multiple charges, was arrested after a homeowner found Wray hiding in a shed and held him at gunpoint until deputies arrived.
