Wichita State ends Cincinnati’s streak

NO. 19 WICHITA STATE 76, NO. 5 CINCINNATI 72

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. — Dave Stallworth was running the show the last time Wichita State beat a Top 5 team on the road. Landry Shamut took the lead as the Shockers did it again 54 years later.

This one, too, will be a reference point, given all that was at stake.

Shamut scored 19 points, and No. 19 Wichita State ended the nation’s longest home-court winning streak, beating No. 5 Cincinnati 76-72 on Sunday to leave the American Athletic Conference race wide open.

The Shockers (21-5, 113) beat a Top 5 team on the road for the first time since 1964. They led most of the way, building an 11-point lead midway through the second half and holding on. Shaquille Morris’ dunk with 5 seconds left finished it off.

The Shockers ran onto the floor for congratulatory chest bumps. Coach Gregg Marshall got a celebratory dunking in the locker room.

The Bearcats (23-4, 12-2) had won their last 39 home games.

Cincinnati and Wichita State were expected to contend for the title in the Shockers’ first season in the AAC. Wichita State gave itself a chance with a solid all-around game led by its point guard. Shamut had 16 points in the first half, when the Shockers shredded the nation’s second-ranked defense to take control.

The Shockers hit 7 of 8 shots during a 17-3 run that gave them a 34-23 lead. Cincinnati responded by turning up its full-court defense, forcing three quick turnovers, and going on a run that cut the deficit to 42-40 at halftime.

The Shockers showed a little defense of their own, forcing five turnovers while rebuilding their lead to 59-48 with 11 minutes left, matching its biggest of the game. Cincinnati closed to 72-70 on Trevon Scott’s dunk with 13 seconds left, but the Shockers scored on a pair of inbound passes by Landry, the last a full-court heave to Morris for a dunk that provided the final margin.

NO. 22 MICHIGAN 74, NO. 8 OHIO STATE 62

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Jordan Poole scored 12 of his 15 points in the first half to help No. 22 Michigan take the lead and it never trailed in the second half of a victory over No. 8 Ohio State.

The Wolverines (22-7, 11-5 Big Ten) beat a rival and helped out another rival, giving No. 2 Michigan State a one-game lead atop the conference standings with two games left in the regular season.

The Buckeyes (22-7, 13-3) have fallen out of first place by losing consecutive Big Ten games for the first time this season.

Michigan’s Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman scored 17, Zavier Simpson had 13 points and Moe Wagner added 12.

NO. 12 DUKE 66, NO. 11 CLEMSON 57

CLEMSON, S.C. — Gary Trent Jr. hit three foul shots with 1:31 left to put No. 12 Duke ahead for good and the Blue Devils, again playing without injured star Marvin Bagley III, beat No. 11 Clemson.

The Blue Devils had given up all of their 10-point lead over a six-minute stretch as the Tigers tied it up 57-57 on David Skara’s jumper. That’s when Trent was off the mark on his three from the right corner, but got fouled by Clemson reserve Scott Spencer.

Trent’s first shot rattled around before falling through and he swished the next two. Duke (22-5, 10-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) won its third consecutive game without Bagley, its leading scorer and rebounder who’s sidelined because of a strained right knee.
