Not the teachers’ job

-

Teacher: a person who teaches, especially in a school. Police: the civil force of a national or local government, responsible for the prevention and detection of crime and the maintenance of public order.

A teacher should not have to be armed. Teachers go through school, get their degree, and attend much training to teach. Police go through school, get their degree, and attend much training to fight crime, to take action. Each job has an equally important role in the community, but they should never be forced together.

Having a gun in the classroom makes it so much easier for a student to access it. In today’s world, there are no secrets, no hiding places. Someone would find out about the gun in the teacher’s desk and tell someone else, and the word would spread like wildfire. And if that word gets around to the wrong person, it could easily end very badly. The moment that teacher leaves the classroom to use the restroom. The moment a substitute comes and the teacher forgets the gun. The moment the teacher thinks he locked the door when he left, but didn’t. Most campuses have resource officers on site for the sole purpose of protecting students. Their guns are locked in their belts and not easily accessible by students.

Teachers play so many key roles in students’ lives, but they do not have the qualifications to carry a gun around many students. Police and resource officers do. Keep guns out of classrooms. JOSIE LEE Alexander
