What we will have left

-

JFK was assassinated on my birthday when I was a child, then not long after, Martin, then Bobby. The Vietnam War went on and on. Young Americans coming home in body bags … Kent State … civil rights riots in the streets … Nixon and Watergate. “I am not a crook.”

Now I’m no longer young. Schoolchildren are being massacred at school with AR-15 rifles. We got Russiagate. We the people asked for Hillary but we got “rump” for our president. Tweeting insane insults. NRA and the top 1 percent are happy enough with their puppet, but the rest of us? Not so much. We the people are being threatened with the loss of everything that we hold dear, that we are proud of, that sustains us, that gives us a democracy.

The only thing I know to do is to resist; the young people who survived the Parkland massacre who refused to meet with our stable genius, that’s good. Those who stretched out in front of the White House, good. We must all resist. Fight with our vote. We must remember in November that he is cutting or wants to cut food stamps, school tuition assistance, solar energy, Meals on Wheels, energy assistance for seniors and disabled, assistance for veterans, Planned Parenthood, PBS, NPR, freedom of speech in our media … we have heard that they are going after Social Security, Medicaid and Medicare.

What’s going to be left for us except an “American Harvest” box of canned goods, some pasta and the right to own an AR-15?
