DeShields seeking another term for circuit clerk

- STAFF REPORT

BENTONVILLE — Benton County Circuit Clerk Brenda DeShields is seeking a ninth term.

The Republican is running unopposed for another twoyear term. Her 2018 salary is $94,657.

DeShields was first elected in 2002. She was the administrative assistant to former Circuit Clerk Sue Hodges for 11 years.

DeShields said her office implemented mandatory electronic filing of records and transitioned to all digital files to expand storage. With the electronic filing she was able to reduce her budget and save the county money, she said.

The Circuit Clerk’s Office implemented updated software for the recorder’s office, she said.

“With the passion I have for maintaining accurate legal records for the citizens of Benton County and being elected as the custodian, I take the responsibility very seriously,” DeShields said.

She said implementation of technology as it becomes available is vital to the record keeping process.

DeShields said later this year she expects to began a “fraud alert” service where a voluntary email notification will be sent to property owners if any documents are recorded in their name.

The Recorder’s Office will soon be offering passport photo photography that will allow for a one-stop process in applying for a U.S. passport, she said. People currently have to purchase photos from a separate, offsite vendor.

DeShields was one of two circuit clerks appointed by the Arkansas chief justice to serve on the Arkansas Supreme Court Strategic Planning Committee. She is also one of 16 board members representing the Arkansas Association of Counties.

She also is chairwoman of the Arkansas Electronic Recording Commission.
