■ Brent Karow, 34, a New York state trooper, was thrown 70 feet and Trooper Shane Swartz, 34, was pinned under a tow truck along with the truck’s driver, seriously injuring the men, when a drunken driver crashed into the back of a police vehicle as they worked a wreck on Interstate 90 in North Greenbush.

■ Charley Davidson, a police spokesman in Wichita, Kan., said two officers responding to a report of a 20-year-old woman threatenin­g to hurt herself with a knife dove into the Little Arkansas River to save the woman after seeing her jump off a bridge into the water below.

■ Holly Boardman, who wrapped brightly colored sweaters and afghans around about two dozen trees in a Manhattan neighborho­od, will be able to keep them in place after city officials agreed to let them stay when residents said the wraps increased business and foot traffic.

■ Viola Badcock, owner of an animal shelter in Hagerman, N.M., said a mild winter followed by a spike in odor complaints from residents has prompted city police to set up traps to relocate a rising number of skunks around town.

■ Rick Dollar, executive director of an Appalachia­n music museum in Kingsport, Tenn., said the museum donated more than 3,500 vinyl LPs and 1,200 78 rpm records to East Tennessee State University for preservati­on and study.

■ Cindy Robert, a volunteer at a Florida wildlife sanctuary near Miami, said dozens of animals, including lemurs, marmosets, monkeys, birds and tortoises, were stolen after someone posted a fake ad online claiming the sanctuary was closing and telling people to come “take what you want.”

■ Roberson Burney, 60, faces life in prison after being convicted of aggravated assault, weapons offenses and other counts stemming from a Christmas 2015 home invasion in Bloomfield, N.J., where he tied up a New Jersey woman and two girls and robbed them, prosecutor­s said.

■ Evan Huck, a snowboarde­r buried in an avalanche at a ski resort in Olympic Valley, Calif., was located when rescuers spotted the tip of his snowboard sticking out of the snow, allowing them to use their hands and shovels to dig him out.

■ Christophe­r Mierzwa, a police commander in Des Plaines, Ill., said three day care center employees who gave 2-year-olds gummies containing sleep-inducing melatonin before nap time without parental permission now face child endangerme­nt charges.
