Arkansas State University
OVERVIEW
Focusing on its mission to educate leaders, enhance intellectual growth and enrich lives, Arkansas State University is the catalyst for progress in the Jonesboro area. Founded in 1909, A- State is a destination university for more than 14,000 students, combining worldclass research with a tradition of student-friendly instruction. The second-largest university in Arkansas, A-State is a doctoral-level institution with more than 150 majors, a diverse student body from across the nation and around the world, and more than 80,000 alumni. A-State is the home of the Red Wolves, a Bowl Championship Series Division I athletic program with seven consecutive bowl appearances.
UNDERGRADUATE LEARNING
The opportunity to learn from leading scholars in their fields doesn’t happen just in our classrooms. Research opportunities alongside our faculty are not the exception at A-State. Whether it is performing experiments at the Arkansas Biosciences Institute at A-State or assisting with research crops on the A-State farm, hands-on work usually associated with graduate school is common for students. Using the motto “Every Red Wolf Counts,” A-State’s faculty and staff are committed to working closely with students to make sure they reach their academic goals. Chancellor Kelly Damphousse has set the tone to enhance one of A-State’s hallmarks: personnel highly engaged with student progress.
CAMPUS LIFE
From A-State’s Living-Learning Communities to new apartment-style living at Pack Place with walk-in closets and nine-foot ceilings, a wide variety of housing options are available as more and more students stay on campus from their first year through graduation. Among our diverse communities are The Circle, a graduate housing complex named for the four African-American faculty and staff pioneers at A-State; Sorority Row, with five new sorority houses; and several specialty living areas ranging from STEM to Honors College to ROTC to international students. Keeping campus safe and welcoming is a high priority. A-State ranked top 10 in the country in 2015 for its campus-safety programs. A-State is the first Arkansas institution designated as a Bicycle Friendly University and the first with LimeBike bike share.
PARTNERING FOR THE FUTURE
Educational entrepreneurship established the first college of osteopathic medicine in the state. The public-private partnership with the New York Institute of Technology brought one of the nation’s most-respected osteopathic colleges to the Delta in fall 2016 and created the second medical school in Arkansas at historic Wilson Hall. It also led to a 50 percent increase in preprofessional students enrolled at A-State. Creating the first American-style residential campus in Mexico in fall 2017, A-State Campus Queretaro is a key part of the university’s global engagement mission.
PROGRAMS
A-State’s strength in media and communication continues with the first social-media management program in the region. A-State’s engineering programs hold three national accreditations. A-State was named in the top 20 in the nation the past two years by NurseJournal. org. U.S. News & World Report has ranked A-State’s online Master of Business Administration degree in the top 15 in the country and top in Arkansas for the past seven years.
