Bon Jovi tour at Verizon; tribute to ‘Broncho Billy’

‘Broncho Billy’ party
The Historic Arkansas Museum, 200 E. Third St., Little Rock, will mark the 138th birthday of Arkansas native Gilbert M. “Broncho Billy” Anderson with a reception and screening of the 1903 silent film The Great Train Robbery, 7 p.m. Wednesday. Silent film scholars David and Rena Kiehn will give a pre-screening presentation. David Kiehn, film programmer and historian at the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum in Fremont, Calif., is the author of Broncho Billy and the Essanay Film Company.
A 6:30 p.m. marker inauguration at the place of Anderson’s birth, 713 Center St. (now the site of Little Rock’s First United Methodist Church), will precede the event.
Anderson was born Max Henry Aronson in Little Rock on March 21, 1880. He moved with his family when he was 3 to Pine Bluff, where he lived until he was 8. He went on to pioneer the film industry, co-founding the Essanay Film Co., where he was a producer, director and actor for 140 films.
He appeared in The Great Train Robbery, the first major cowboy/Western film; signed to Essanay a young Charlie Chaplin, who made 14 films there; and produced The Lucky Dog, the first film to pair Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. Anderson received an honorary Oscar in 1958 at the 30th Academy Awards for his contributions to cinema.

Hiring violinists
The Symphony of Northwest Arkansas will hold 201819 season auditions May 4 in Fayetteville for two violinists (one first, one second). Submit a one-page resume via email by April 20 to Personnel Manager Jarrett Bastow at jarrett@ sonamusic.org. (No phone calls please.)

Piano festival
April 11 is the deadline for K-12 students to enter the University of Central Arkansas Community School of Music’s fifth annual O. Samuel Driggers Piano Festival, 9 a.m.-noon April 21 in the Snow Fine Arts Center at UCA, 201 Donaghey Ave., Conway. On April 29, The Weekend Theater will sponsor a brunch and two performances of Del Shores’ new one-man show, Six Characters in Search of a Play. Shores will be a featured guest at the brunch, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at 610 Center Bar & Grill, 610 Center St., Little Rock, which will feature a buffet, drinks and information about the Weekend Theater’s 2018-19 season lineup.
