■ Ryan Fish, 23, a former high school substitute teacher in Montville, Conn., denied charges that he supervised a “fight club” by encouragin­g students to slap one another in a classroom, saying he thought the students were just being “rambunctio­us.”

■ Richard Wahl, 47, a new resident of Vernon, N.J., who won a $533 million Mega Millions lottery jackpot, first responded “absolutely not” when his mother called to ask if he had the winning ticket before he was ready to tell people, including his family, that he had won.

■ Xavier Moran, 25, who gave sheriff’s deputies in Palm Beach County, Fla., permission to search his dashboard camera after being involved in a wreck, was arrested when the deputy reviewing the footage found images of Moran breaking into a beauty supply store with another man.

■ Andy Timmins, a New Hampshire bear biologist, said a female bear that was spared last spring by New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu will have to be relocated after she returned with four new cubs to Hanover where she has feasted at homes near Dartmouth College for the past few years.

■ Jerry Bostick, 58, of Brentwood, Tenn., was sentenced to six months of home detention, fined $100,000 and placed on probation after pleading guilty to possessing .45-caliber and 9mm submachine guns that weren’t registered with the National Firearms Registry.

■ Blake Cannon, 16, said he heard a voice saying “My baby, my baby,” when he went to the rear of a burning apartment building in Carolina Forest, S.C., and caught a child that had been tossed down from a third-story window just before other family members jumped to escape the flames.

■ Bobby Joe Smith, 77, a former judge in Hart County, Ga., was indicted on bribery and other charges after several women said he forcibly kissed and groped them when they sought help with traffic violations in 2013 and 2014.

■ Martha Ojeda, 42, of Pflugervil­le, Texas, was sentenced to five years in federal prison after pleading guilty to having sex with a 15-year-old from Louisiana whom she met online and taking him to Texas so they could live together.

■ Paul Nicholson, president of a soup kitchen in Hampton, N.H., said that while a fire destroyed the facility’s equipment and decoration­s, a stained-glass replica of Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper hanging on a wall was spared the flames.
