BASEBALL Zimmerman on DL

The Washington Nationals have placed first baseman Ryan Zimmerman on the 10-day disabled list with a right oblique strain. Washington also promoted veteran infielder Mark Reynolds from Class AAA Syracuse before Saturday’s game at Arizona. Zimmerman last played on Wednesday at San Diego. Manager Dave Martinez said he hopes 10 days of rest will be enough to allow Zimmerman to return at full strength. Reynolds, 34, has 11 seasons of major league experience, most recently playing 148 games for the Colorado Rockies last season. He played 10 games at Syracuse this year. Reynolds hit .267 with 30 home runs and 97 RBI last year. Washington is his eighth major league team, and he has played 695 games at first base.

Naquin strains hamstring

Naquin pulled up running into second base Friday night after his two-run double in the fourth inning against Kansas City. He was replaced in the top of the fifth and an MRI revealed the strain. Naquin, primarily playing right field, is batting .333 with 2 home runs and 11 RBI in 30 games. Olson was placed on the paternity list Friday when Andrew Miller was activated after missing more than two weeks with a hamstring injury. Miller gave up a two-run home run to Salvador Perez in the seventh inning Friday and took the loss in a 9-8 defeat. Olson is 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA in 15 appearances.

MOTOR SPORTS Hamilton sets record

Lewis Hamilton set a track record to take pole position for the Spanish Grand Prix on Saturday. Hamilton had a lap time of 1 minute, 16.173 seconds at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, finishing only four hundredths of a second ahead of Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas. Sebastian Vettel, who had won three consecutive poles, will start third with Ferrari, ahead of teammate Kimi Raikkonen. Red Bull drivers Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo were fifth and sixth, respectively. A good starting position is crucial in Spain as there are not many overtaking opportunities. Hamilton will be trying to win his second race in a row and add to his four-point lead over Vettel in the drivers’ standings. Vettel won in Australia and Bahrain, while Ricciardo was first in China and Hamilton triumphed in Azerbaijan. Mercedes had been fastest in all three practice sessions this weekend, with Hamilton and Bottas leading the timesheets. Most teams brought significant updates to Barcelona, which marks the beginning of the European season in F1. Kevin Magnussen will start seventh with Haas, while teammate Romain Grosjean is 10th on the grid.
