Youth lockups rely on outside help

The staff at two state-run juvenile lockups in Dermott frequently called the city’s Police Department to assist with breaking up fights and other serious incidents between January and April. This list does not include call logs from the Chicot County sheriff’s office, which also responds to calls for help by the facility’s staff. Police refer to the Dermott sites as “the camp."

Saturday, Jan. 27, 2018, 6:48 p.m.: Police were called in to settle a fight.

Saturday, Feb. 10, 2018, 8:43 p.m. and 8:52 p.m.: Police were called in to handle a riot that “was about to kick off.” The staff called back and told police that a youth hit a facility worker.

Monday, Feb. 26, 3018, 12:14 and 12:19 a.m.: Police were requested to settle a fight that the facility’s staff described as a potential riot. Police told the staff that this was their job and they should be able to handle the situation. Police said they would respond if a riot ensued.

Saturday, March 17, 2018, 10:02 p.m.: Police were called in to help breakup a fight, but they were advised that a Chicot County sheriff's deputy responded first. The sheriff’s office called about 50 minutes later, requesting assistance from an on-duty officer.

Thursday, April 5, 2018, 8:41 p.m.: Police were called in response to a case involving a runaway juvenile and another teenager who was missing. Police were advised “it’s out of control at the camp."

Friday, April 13, 2018: 7:45 p.m.: Police were called in to help with a “disorderly client.” The staff calls back nine minutes later and says it has the incident under control.

Friday, April 20, 2018, 10:54 a.m.: Police were called in to help the staff resolve a fight among multiple youths.

Friday, April 20, 2018, 7:13 p.m.: Police were called to help subdue a youth who was pounding on windows and threatenin­g to hit workers.
