Emily Bruce of Centerton is a spring 2018 graduate of Chadron (Neb.) State College, awarded a bachelor of arts dergee during commencement May 5.

NORTHWEST ARKANSAS COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Veronica Rodriguez Jones of Huntsville was honored May 12 as the recipient of the Dick

Trammel Outstanding Alumni

Award at Northwest Arkansas Community College

Jones, a 2015 graduate, spoke during the commencement ceremony. She received an associate of applied science degree in graphic design and is the immigrant family outreach coordinator for Arkansas Support Network.

In addition to her role at Arkansas Support Network, Jones is a diversity and inclusion consultant for the Fitness Center at The Jones Center. She is a board member of Dress for Success NWA and is involved in recruiting participants and marketing the program among the Hispanic and Marshallese communities. Jones She also served as an honorary chair for the American Heart Association’s Vestido Rojo (Red Dress) event in Northwest Arkansas. She is continuing her education online at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL OKLAHOMA

Alexandra Fackler of West Fork is a 2018 graudate of the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond. She graduated with honors, earning a master of music degree in music, collaborative piano.

TOP GED SCORER

Abbey Surom of Bentonville earned the state’s highest score on the GED exam in 2017. She and other top scoreres were honored at a ceremony May 2 in the Arkansas State Capitol Rotunda.

Surom is a student at Northwest Arkansas Community College, studying social scienes. She left high school in late 2016 after missing weeks of school due to hospitalization. She decided to pursue a GED and prepare for the test with the help of her local Adult Education Center at Northwest Arkansas Community College.

GRANTHAM UNIVERSITY

Ryan Lippincott of Bella Vista and Robert Ragsdale of Fort Smith are recent graduates of the online degree and certificate programs of Grantham University in Lenexa, Kan.

EASTERN CONNECTICUT STATE UNIVERSITY

Jhomara Hernandez of Pea Ridge, a political science and theater major at Eastern Connecticut State University in Windham, was recognized by the school with an academic achievement award during the sixth annual Inclusive Excellence Awards ceremony May 6. Awards were given to students earning grade-point averages of 3.5 or higher.

SONORA MIDDLE SCHOOL

Sonora Middle School in the Springdale Public School District plans to apply for the Arkansas Department of Education 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant 2018-2019. If the school receives this grant, it will provide structured activities, meals, a community building and high interest learning to its students.

UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS AT LITTLE ROCK

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock recognized top students during recent ceremonies.

The George W. Donaghey college of engineering and information technology at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock honored several local students during the college’s annual awards ceremony April 27: Pablo Centeno of Fort Smith received first place and the sophomore award in the EIT abstract awards and department of engineering technology awards; Cindy Monterroza of Van Buren, outstanding junior award in the department of computer science; Connor Young of Springdale, outstanding doctoral student award in the department of computer science; Evan Alden of Springdale, outstanding student ambassador in the department of information science awards.

The college of arts, letters, and sciences recognized its top students and scholarship recipients during the college’s awards ceremony on May 1: Robert Hill of Bella Vista, Frank Lamar Setliff endowed scholarship; Shazeena Ashraf of Fort Smith, Dewoody and Emily Fleming Dickinson math scholarship; Jessica Regalado of Rogers received the performing arts award, dance; Jessica Ley of Rogers. Joan Taylor scholarship, theater.

UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA LINCOLN

Christopher McEwin of Rogers is a 2018 graduate of the University of Nebraska Lincoln, with bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering.

GRACELAND UNIVERSITY

Keely Compton of Rogers, Desiree Nelson of Fayetteville and Izabella Smith of Pea Ridge have been named to the spring 2018 president’s list at Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa, with 4.0 grade-point averages.

Regenia Hilton of Fort Smith was named to the spring 2018 honors list, with a grade-point average of 3.65 to 3.99.

PROVIDENCE CLASSICAL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY

Providence Classical Christian Academy in Rogers celebrated accomplishments of its seventh graduating class in a May 3 awards ceremony.

Several students received the governor’s distinguished scholarship award, which pays up to $10,000 annually for four years, including Mason Bennett, Sarah Cooper, Byron Denham, Riley Fox, Adam Philip, Hope Smith and Nora Smith.

Dick Trammel of Rogers was presented with the school’s second annual Mike Duke Christian Leadership Award, given to an outstanding leader who has made a significant impact in Northwest Arkansas, as an extension of the school’s mission of “Building Leaders for Christ.”

CODING COMPETITION

Matthew Anderson, William Babb and Jonathan Brinkley, a team from Gentry High School, earned third place in the second annual Governor’s AllState Coding Competition, which was held recently at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro. Each team member received a scholarship of $500, and the school receievd $4,000 to support the computer science program.

ARKANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY

The honors college at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro hosted the ninth annual honors recognition ceremony and reception May 11 at the Cooper Alumni Center.

Samantha Black of Fort Smith and Samantha McKnight of Berryville graduated with university honors. Jonathan Arrington of Springdale, Jessica Holsted of Harrison, Kyla McCain of Farmington and Clinton Summers of Berryville all graduated with honors. Drew Jones of Fort Smith earned the honors certificate.

ARKANSAS TECH UNIVERSITY

Lantwan Traylor of Rogers is a 2018 graduate of Arkansas Tech University in Jonesboro, with bachelor of arts degrees in sociology and psychology. He also was presented with the 2018 Jill Lestage Brown service leadership award during commencement ceremonies for his efforts in organizing a food recovery program from campus eateries for local relief organizations and a food pantry for students.
