Cardinals power their way to win over Padres with three homers

-

ST. LOUIS — Marcell Ozuna and Jose Martinez hit two-run homers, rookie Jack Flaherty pitched into the seventh inning, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the San Diego Padres 5-2 on Monday night.

Jedd Gyorko added a one-out home run in the eighth.

The Cardinals have won 13 of their last 18 games against the Padres, who have dropped 46 of their last 62 games in St. Louis.

Flaherty ( 3-2) pitched 61/ innings, his second-longest outing this season. He allowed one run and three hits with a walk and six strikeouts. It was a bounce-back effort for Flaherty, who took an 113 loss in his previous start against Miami. Flaherty, 22, has pitched five or more innings in all eight starts this season.

Flaherty retired 14 consecutive batters before issuing a one-walk in the seventh. John Brebbia relieved and walked the bases loaded before getting two strikeouts to end the threat.

Bud Norris earned his 13th save in 15 chances.

Jordan Lyles (2-3) gave up 11 hits and four runs in six innings.

St. Louis went ahead 2-1 in the third when Martinez homered into the right-field bleachers after Tommy Pham led off with a single. Martinez has five homers over his last five games.

After Martinez singled for his third hit in the fifth, Ozuna followed with a drive into the leftfield bleachers on an 0-2 breaking pitch left over the plate, giving the Cardinals a 4-1 advantage. It was Ozuna’s fourth homer in his last nine games.

Cory Spangeberg hit a line-drive homer into the right- field seats with one out in the second, giving San Diego a 1-0 lead.

The Padres added a run in the eighth when Travis Jankowski hit a ground-rule double, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a ground out.

MARLINS 7, GIANTS 5 Madison Bumgarner blew a sixth inning lead and was ejected on the way out of his second start this season as the Miami Marlins rallied past the San Francisco Giants. J.T. Realmuto had three hits including his seventh home run of the season and drove in two and Brian Anderson homered, doubled twice, and drove in two runs for the Marlins. Bumgarner allowed back-to-back hits to begin the sixth with a 4-2 lead. Cameron Maybin hit a sacrifice fly and then Justin Bour walked on four pitches prompting Bumgarner to voice his displeasure to home plate umpire Jeremie Rehak. The four-time All-Star was able to convince manager Bruce Bochy to stay in the game, but then immediately allowed a game-tying hit by Lewis Brinson ending his outing. On his way to the dugout, Bumgarner again had words for Rehak, who ejected him. Bumgarner, who missed the first two months of the season with a broken pinkie finger on his left hand, gave up four runs and six hits in 51/ innings. He walked one while striking out three, throwing 50 of his 91 pitches for strikes. Brandon Crawford’s sacrifice fly in the seventh gave the Giants a 5-4 lead. Anderson responded with an RBI double to tie the game at 5. Realmuto followed with a two-run home run to center field off Sam Dyson (2-1). He also had a single and a double to fall a triple shy of the cycle for the eighth time in his career. Adam Conley (2-0) tossed a scoreless inning and Kyle Barraclough pitched a flawless ninth for his third save in five chances. Andrew McCutchen and Evan Longoria each had two hits and drove in a run for the Giants. Bumgarner cruised through the first three innings without allowing a run or a walk before Anderson led off the fourth with a home run. Realmuto doubled and Brinson tripled to give the Marlins a 2-1 lead later in the inning. The Giants bounced back with three runs off Wei-Yen Chen in the fifth for a 4-2 lead. McCutchen tied the game with an RBI double before Chen balked in a run and reliever Brad Ziegler walked Nick Hundley with the bases loaded. Chen allowed four runs and six hits in 41/ innings.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

RAYS 8, BLUE JAYS 4 Jake Bauers hit his first career home run to put Tampa Bay ahead in the fourth inning and the Rays went on to a victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. Bauers’ two- run homer off Sam Gaviglia after Matt Duffy’s single erased a 4-3 Toronto lead. Tampa Bay tacked on three runs in the seventh with the help of a bases-loaded throwing error by reliever John Axford. Left- hander Ryan Yarbrough, who leads the major leagues with 44

relief innings, started and pitched six innings for the Rays. Yarbrough ( 5- 2) gave up four runs on seven hits while striking out three in his first start since May 14. Bauers, playing in his fifth major league game, got on base his first four times and scored three runs. Rookie Willy Adames, recalled earlier Monday from the minor leagues, also drove in two runs for the Rays, who won for only the second time in 11 games. Gaviglia (2-2) gave up five runs on seven hits and two walks in 31/ innings. Teoscar Hernandez hit his 11th homer for the Blue Jays, who had won four straight. RED SOX 2, ORIOLES 0, 12 INNINGS

Brock Holt and Jackie Bradley Jr. each delivered a sacrifice fly in the 12th inning, and the Boston Red Sox limited the Baltimore Orioles to five hits in a victory. A pitching duel between Dylan Bundy and Steven Wright was ultimately decided long after both starters departed. Xander Bogaerts led off the 12th with a single against Mychal Givens (0-3), and the Red Sox went on to load the bases before Holt broke the scoreless deadlock with a fly to center. Bradley followed with a fly ball to score Rafael Devers, who had doubled. Heath Hembree (3-1) struck out the side in the 11th and Craig Kimbrel got three outs for his 21st save. It was the fifth straight loss for the Orioles, who have been shut

out seven times this season. Facing a Boston team that leads the majors in runs and batting average, Bundy gave up three hits over eight innings. He struck out seven, walked two and did not permit a runner to reach third base. It was his fourth scoreless outing of the season, the second in a row. Last week, the right-hander blanked the Mets on three hits in seven innings. Wright was going up against an offense that ranked last in the AL in runs and was missing slugger Manny Machado. The knuckleballer allowed four hits over 62/ innings. In the seventh, after Baltimore used two walks and an infield hit to load the bases with two outs, Joe Kelly entered and struck out Adam Jones with a 97 mph fastball. Red Sox outfielder Mookie Betts was reinstated from the disabled list before the game and went 1 for 5 in the leadoff spot. Betts, who came in with a major league-leading .359 batting average, missed 14 games with an abdominal strain.

INDIANS 4, WHITE SOX 0 Carlos Carrasco struck out 11 while pitching two-hit ball over seven innings, and the Cleveland Indians beat the Chicago White Sox. Michael Brantley hit his 11th homer and the AL Central leaders took advantage of another wild outing by Lucas Giolito to win for the fifth time in six games. They improved to 4-0 against Chicago. Carrasco (8-4) gave up singles to Kevan Smith and Charlie Tilson in the second before striking out Adam Engel to end the threat. The right-hander issued just one walk, giving him a total of two to go with 21 strikeouts while winning his past two starts. Three relievers combined to work the final two innings, with Neil Ramirez retiring all three batters in the ninth to complete the two-hitter. Giolito (4-7) threw more balls (47) than strikes (46) in giving up four runs and four hits in five-plus innings. The 23-year-old righty walked four to bring his season total to 43 as the White Sox opened a seven-game homestand on a losing note after taking two of three at Boston. Owner of the majors’ second-worst ERA coming into the game, Giolito ran into trouble in the fourth when he walked Yonder Alonso and Melky Cabrera with two outs. Lonnie Chisenhall blooped an RBI single in front of diving center fielder Adam Engel before Yan Gomes lined a two-run double to left. Brantley added a long drive down the right-field line in the fifth.
