Constitutional convention a dangerous path to pursue

-

As freedom-loving Americans celebrate our independence on the Fourth of July, are they aware of the attack on our U.S. Constitution through an Article V Convention? This attack has been taking place for many years. In 1983, 32 states were calling for a convention. It takes 34 to call one. Thanks to the education programs of Eagle Forum and the John Birch Society, states began to realize the dangers of a convention, and 17 states withdrew their call.

Supreme Court Justice Warren Burger in a letter to Eagle Forum founder Phyllis Schlafly, warned, “I have also repeatedly given my opinion that there is no effective way to limit or muzzle the actions of a constitutional convention. The convention could make its own rules and set its own agenda. Congress might try to limit the convention to one amendment or to one issue, but there is no way to assure that the convention would obey. After a convention is convened, it will be too late to stop the convention if we don’t like its agenda.”

Currently, there are 28 states with live applications. A key player for calling a convention has been retired Supreme Court Justice, John Paul Stevens. In his book, “Six Amendments: How And Why We Should Change The Constitution,” Stevens suggested adding five words to the Second Amendment. Here is how the Second Amendment would read: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, when serving in the Militia, shall not be infringed.”

In other words, we the people would have to be serving in the military to possess a firearm. In another area, there is a movement to do away with the Electoral College. Hillary Clinton would be our president today had the founding fathers not had the wisdom to place the Electoral College in the Constitution. Should it ever be terminated, about 12 of our most populated states would elect the president every four years — California, New York, Illinois, etc.

If the United States is to remain a self-governing nation of free people, the Constitution must not be tampered with by deep state Socialists. We could have a runaway convention. For information on the dangers of a convention, go to thenewamerican.com and jbs.org.
