8 p.m. on SYFY Face Off

Host McKenzie Westmore calls all hands on deck in the new episode “Death Dealers,” but the pressure is off — a bit, at least — for the artists this week, since this isn’t an elimination episode. The “deck,” in this case, is a set of tarot cards, with the artists and their battle partners challenged to create makeups that are based on actual tarot card readings.

8 p.m. on Travel Channel Bizarre Foods With Andrew Zimmern

Host Andrew Zimmern follows some of the most iconic routes in history in Season 20 of his hit culinary series. In the season premiere, Zimmern rides the last 200 miles of the old Pony Express Trail, to its endpoint in Sacramento, Calif. Along the way, he samples the food those young riders in the past would have enjoyed, such as son-of-a-gun stew, fire-roasted duck hearts, boiled elk tongue and pine nut soup, as well as fresher creations such as cowboy sushi (wagyu beef over vinegar-seasoned rice).

9 p.m. on The Last Defense

One of this documentary series’ stories concludes with the new episode“Darlie Routier: The Fight,” in which Routier’s defense attorneys try to come up with fresh plans to present her case in a retrial. Time is of the essence since she has been sentenced to death, and the strain of that apparent fate expectedly weighs heavily on her existing relationships — and one in particular. Spouses Viola Davis and Julius Tennon are among the executive producers here.

9 p.m. on Comedy Central sw Drunk History

In a new episode that is built around animal-themed events and personalities, one sketch reveals how a horse that can solve math problems led to advances in the field of psychology. Other segments concern a lawyer who defends the lives of rats in court; and Henry Bergh establishes the American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Derek Waters is the host of “Animals.”

9:01 p.m. on A&E Cults and Extreme Belief

The new episode “FLDS” looks at the Fundamentalist Church of Latter Day Saints, a radical polygamous sect that split off from the mainstream Mormon Church. Its notorious founder, Warren Jeffs, was sentenced to life in prison for child sexual assault, but that only left true believers like Norma Richter forced to fend for themselves in an outside world they once had been taught to fear deeply.
