■ Joey “Jaws” Chestnut, 34, extended his reign as champion of the Nathan’s Famous July Fourth hot dog eating contest held at New York’s Coney Island, downing a record 74 wieners and buns in 10 minutes to take the Mustard Belt for an 11th time. ■ Anna Mae Blessing, 92, of Fountain Hills, Ariz., angry that her 72-year-old son wanted to put her in an assisted living facility, confronted him with two pistols concealed in the pockets of her robe and fatally shot him, investigat­ors with the Maricopa County sheriff’s office said.

■ Jaisaan Lovett, the first black valedictor­ian at a prep school in Rochester, N.Y., delivered his graduation speech at City Hall at the invitation of the mayor after he was barred from addressing his classmates at a June commenceme­nt exercise because of a dispute with the school’s leader.

■ Sean Larkin, a police sergeant in Tulsa, will be the face of “PD Cam,” a new 30-minute cable TV show aimed at looking at law enforcemen­t work from the officers’ perspectiv­e by offering unfiltered video from police body-worn, dashboard and helicopter cameras.

■ Amelia Milling, 21, a Tennessee college student injured when she tumbled down a snowy hiking trail and into the Eagle River east of Anchorage, Alaska, was rescued by a 7-year-old Alaskan husky named Nanook that pulled her to shore and camped with her overnight until help arrived.

■ David Foxman, a judge in Volusia County, Fla., refused to send a cabbie to jail for violating a Daytona Beach city ordinance requiring drivers to wear collared shirts while on duty, calling the misdemeano­r charge like living “in a communist country or something.”

■ Melinda Rosetti-Spence blamed her situation on “a gambling problem” before she was sentenced to 10 years in prison for embezzling about $266,600 from the Pink Hearts Fund, a cancer charity based in Long Beach, Miss.

■ Trey Bergman, a Houston attorney and defending champion, immersed his face in a 9-inch Key lime pie as he consumed it in 1 minute, 41 seconds, beating 24 others to win the July 4 pie-eating contest in Key West, Fla.
