100 YEARS AGO July 10, 1918

ALMA —The man found killed on the railroad tracks here Sunday evening proved to be Joseph Sherwood, a member of the United Mine Workers of America. City Marshal George Roberts establishe­d his identity by phoning to Spadra, where he located a niece of the dead man, Mrs. John H. Harboute. He also located his mother and a brother who lives at Krebs, Okla., and another brother, Robert Sherwood, at Midland.

50 YEARS AGO July 10, 1968

PINE BLUFF — The Pine Bluff School Board voted Tuesday night to establish a central high school for all white and negro students in the District beginning with the fall term in 1969. The Board announced the new plan to eliminate the dual system after an investigat­ion by the Department of Health, Education and Welfare. HEW told the the District to file a new desegregat­ion plan by July 15. Grades 10 through 12 at Southeast and Merrill High Schools, both predominat­ely Negro, will be transferre­d to Pine Bluff High School in 1969, the Board said.

HOT SPRINGS — A suspect in five Mississipp­i slayings stands by suicide notes confessing crimes and denies there are more victims, Garland County Sheriff Larry Selig said Friday. Greenville, Miss., criminal investigat­ors shared notes with Alan C. Dorris, 32, of Jackson, Miss., who is under 24-hour guard in the intensive care unit at AMI National Park Medical Center, Selig said. Dorris allegedly shot himself in the mouth Thursday at a rest area east of Hot Springs and confessed to the homicides in two notes, one to his family and the other to police. Authoritie­s found the notes in the truck cab.

■ Law enforcemen­t agents searching for drugs in a North Little Rock storage facility Tuesday recovered eight firearms and other property — including a portable computer drive containing government documents — and arrested two suspects who drove up while the search was under way. Shang David Powers, 36, of Sherwood, and Travis Shane Allen, 33, of North Little Rock, were taken into custody as they arrived at a storage unit Powers had rented at AAA Mini Storage, 3400 Industrial Center.
