Chinese and HSU musicians perform; Pentatonix at AMP
A two-week music festival involving students from Hebei Vocational Art College in Shijiazhuang (Hebei Province), China, and from Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, kicks off today.
The festival — which includes workshops, lectures and various social opportunities — culminates with a series of four free 7 p.m. public performances (reserve seats at hsu.edu/ international programs/ festival.html):

AMP a cappella
Grammy-winning a cappella quintet Pentatonix performs at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Walmart AMP, 5079 W. Northgate Road, Rogers, part of the 2018 Cox Concert Series. Doors open at 6. Bluegrass Monday
“Bluegrass-retro-rockabilly-hillbilly” band The Kody Norris Show — Norris; Mary Rachel Nalley, fiddle and mandolin; Josiah Tyree, banjo; and Tyler Wiseman, upright bass — will perform at 7 p.m. Monday at the Collins Theatre, 120 W. Emerson St., Paragould, part of Jonesboro public radio station KASU-FM’s Bluegrass Monday concert series. The station will literally “pass the hat” to pay the group; suggested donation is $5 per person. Doors open at 6. Fathom Events’ “Studio Ghibli Fest 2018” and GKIDS will screen Hayao Miyazaki’s animated classic Princess Mononoke, dubbed into English (with the voices of Gillian Anderson, Billy Crudup, Claire Danes, Minnie Driver, Jada Pinkett Smith and Billy Bob Thornton), 12:55 p.m. today and 7 p.m. Wednesday and with English subtitles, 7 p.m. Monday, at the Regal Breckenridge 12 and Colonel Glenn 18 in Little Rock, the Tinseltown in Benton and the Malco Razorback Cinema in Fayetteville. Arkansas Public Theatre will stage Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, lyrics by Tim Rice), 8 p.m. Friday-Saturday, Aug. 2-4 and 9-11 and 2 p.m. July 29, Aug. 5 and 12 at the Victory Theater, 116 S. The theater company will also hold auditions for the musical Sunset Boulevard (music by Lloyd Webber, book and lyrics by Don Black and Christopher Hampton, based on the Billy Wilder film), 7 p.m. July 31 at the Victory Theater. Marty the Zebra, Alex the Lion, Melman the Giraffe, Gloria the Hippo and a group of plotting penguins escape to explore the world in Madagascar — A Musical Adventure, Jr. (music and lyrics by George Noriega & Joel Someillan, book by Kevin Del Aguila, based on the DreamWorks Animation motion picture). Governor’s Awards
Sept. 7 is the deadline to nominate artists, arts patrons, arts educators and corporations for the Arkansas Arts Council’s 2018 Governor’s Arts Awards. The awards honor current Arkansas residents or Arkansas-based corporations for outstanding contributions to the arts community in seven categories: Arts Community Development, Arts in Education, Corporate Sponsorship of the Arts, Individual Artist, Folklife, Patron and Lifetime Achievement.
