Bote, Rizzo homer in ninth to lift Cubs over D-Backs

-

CHICAGO — A day that began with Kris Bryant’s return to the disabled list ended with a late power surge by the Chicago Cubs.

David Bote hit a tying, two-run homer off Brad Boxberger with one out in the ninth inning, Anthony Rizzo followed two pitches later with a winning home run and the Cubs overcame a five-run deficit to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-6 on Thursday.

Bote was called up when Bryant was put on the DL because of inflammation in his left shoulder. Bote drove a thigh-high 0-2 fastball about a half-dozen rows in the bleachers in left-center for his second home run this season, tying the score 6-6.

“It was a great feeling,” Bote said. “Just seeing it go out, tied game. Of course, Rizzo hitting that ball to walk off was incredible.”

Rizzo took a strike, then sent a thigh-high changeup to the top of the bleachers in right-center for his 13th homer, but first since June 24.

METS 12, PIRATES 6 Asdrubal Cabrera went 3 for 5 with a home run and four RBIs to break out of an extended slump, and the New York Mets pounded the sloppy Pittsburgh Pirates 12-6 on Thursday night for their first three-game winning streak since mid-June. Cabrera entered hitting just .184 (7 for 38) in his prior 12 games. He doubled home Devin Mesoraco in the second against Nick Kingham (5-5) and hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer in the fourth. Wilmer Flores also hit a two-run homer and had three RBIs as the struggling Mets posted their highest run total since scoring a dozen times against Colorado on June 18.

PHILLIES 9, REDS 4 Rhys Hoskins, Maikel Franco and Nick Williams each hit two of Philadelphia’s record-tying seven home runs, and the Phillies overpowered the Cincinnati Reds 9-4 on Thursday night in the opener of a four-game series. Carlos Santana added a two-run homer as the NL East leaders tied the franchise record for home runs in a game, set on Sept. 8, 1998, against the Mets. Left-hander Ranger Suarez (1-0) won his major league debut, allowing six hits and four runs with one walk and three strikeouts in five innings. Eugenio Suarez and Tucker Barnhart each reached him for two-run homers.

NATIONALS 10, MARLINS 3 Trea Turner

homered and hit a tiebreaking, two-run triple in the seventh inning that led the Washington Nationals over the Miami Marlins 10-3 on Thursday night. Juan Soto also homered and Matt Wieters added a two-run double for the Nationals, who trailed 3-0 before rallying. Washington had nine extra-base hits in the opener of a four-game series. DODGERS 8, BRAVES 2 Manny Machado hit his first home run for Los Angeles, Rich Hill pitched seven dominant innings and the Dodgers routed the Atlanta Braves 8-2 on Thursday night. Machado, acquired last week from Baltimore to add even more punch to a team that leads the National League in homers, went deep in his seventh game with the Dodgers. He lined a fastball into the left-field seats leading off the sixth against Anibal Sanchez, Machado’s 25th homer of the season overall.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

ANGELS 12, WHITE SOX 8 Francisco Arcia became the first Los Angeles Angels player with four RBIs in his major league debut, hitting a three-run homer in a 12-8 win over the Chicago White Sox on Thursday. A 28-year-old who has spent 12 seasons in the minor leagues, Arcia was called up from Triple-A Salt Lake and started at catcher following the trade of Martin Maldonado to Houston earlier in the day. Batting eighth in the order, Arcia lined out in the second inning, walked in the fourth, struck out in the fifth and hit a three-run homer in the seventh against Juan Minaya that put the Angels ahead 9-5. He added a run-scoring single in the eighth off Chris Volstad. Ian Kinsler and Kole Calhoun also homered for the Angels, who have won consecutive games for the first time since June 29-30.

YANKEES 7, ROYALS 2 Yankees slugger Aaron Judge was hit on his right wrist by a pitch and forced to leave early Thursday night, overshadowing New York’s 7-2 romp past the Kansas City Royals. The Yankees said Judge was seen by a team doctor at the stadium and taken to a hospital for an MRI. There was no immediate report on the injury. Normally an All-Star outfielder, Judge was the designated hitter. He winced when he was stung by a fastball from Jakob Junis in the first inning, got an infield hit the next time up and then was pulled for a pinch-hitter in the fourth. Sonny Gray (8-7) pitched five shutout innings to win three straight starts for the first time since last July. He exited soon after getting nicked in the pitching hand by a hard grounder.

RAYS 4, ORIOLES 3 Adeiny Hechavarria singled in the tiebreaking run in the seventh inning, and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Baltimore Orioles 4-3 Thursday night in a matchup of teams in selling mode near the non-waiver trade deadline. Out of contention despite owning a winning record, the Rays dealt pitchers Nathan Eovaldi and Matt Andriese on Wednesday.

TWINS 2, RED SOX 1 Mitch Garver hit a tiebreaking RBI double with two outs in the eighth inning, and the Minnesota Twins held on to beat the Boston Red Sox 2-1 on Thursday night. Kyle Gibson (5-7) held Boston to four hits and one run in eight innings. Fernando Rodney surrendered a single and back-to-back walks to load the bases in the ninth, but he struck out Jackie Bradley Jr. to complete the five-hitter and earn his 22nd save in 27 opportunities. The Twins have won four straight. Boston has lost three of five.
