Minority in the future

-

There seems to be a rising concern about the current demographic makeup of our population and a future shift that could put the Caucasian segment of our population in a minority status. This is partially the result of lower birth rates of white people in the U.S. compared to significantly higher birth rates of people of color. In addition, immigration from all over the world fleeing persecution, life-threatening situations, or just seeking a better life has added to the mix. Some have been welcomed for the skills they brought with them, while others just for the needed labor force they could furnish.

If those who are predicting a minority status for whites are correct, I say “so what.” Worldwide, whites have always been a minority. And look at California. They are doing just fine, with a booming economy, and they already have a white minority.

If you are among those who are worried about living in America as a minority, rest easily. Just think of our black, Native American, Chinese and Hispanic groups, to name a few, that have lived here as minority populations for over 200 years. They survived, prospered, and some even flourished to achieve great things. You will too.

However, if you are concerned about how you will be perceived and treated as a member of a minority, discuss your concerns with members of those other groups that preceded you in minority status for guidance and support. In this country we help each other. It is the American way. BILL FARRELL Bella Vista
